Contemplating a trip over and obviously I'd be all over the arcade stuff. Just a couple of questions for anyone that might know.

Pcbs seem to have gone very expensive there, at least in the likes of specialist shops. But is this reflective of the "homegrown" scene? But is there the likes of buy-and-sell local stuff, just people chucking out stuff? I'm guessing there has to be something like this. I suppose anything exposed to the outside world (yahoo auctions and so on) are practically useless.

Secondly, what about arcade cabinets? I'm assuming they have a lot more floating around than we do, but where do you begin? Just knocking on doors like here? I'd be interested in picking up the mini-sized cabinets like capcom cutes etc because they'd be easier/cheaper to ship. It'll be a cold day in hell before I pay the prices in Europe!

Very difficult to get an inside view on the scene over there :/

Just to clarify, I think capcom cutes are something like 3 or 4 grand hence the "no way". Other candy cabinets are somewhat reasonably priced I guess

This is just a quick overview from my experiences and others may have a more accurate information..

Modern machines are recycled or repurposed/upgraded.
Eventuality they are shipped overseas on bulk (say to China - such as Yaton6262 on ebay) or are imported directly out of Japan on request by a few individuals such as www.RKLOK.nl (good seller btw).  Sometimes stuff ends up on the auction sites, usual thru an arcade operator or after a store closes. Those tend to be more 'sold as seen' or listed as Junk.
Classic machines like the Capcom cute from the 90's are still in the arcades and having a machine at home is even rarer than in the UK due to the average property size being smaller.
A lot of towns even have an arcade or games in local shopping centers people can scratch the itch easily.   There is a healthy PCB collecting scene and some clubs/private arcades.
The prices have gone up and recently I've sold some games back to Japan as it was still cheaper for the seller to import.
So I would say you are best off making communication with an importer who has the contacts.
That said the PCB shops in Japan, such as MAK/GFront. are a great experience and there are some bargains to be had, but it's kind of pot luck what they have in when you go and visit them.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing.

Just going by what youre saying (especially about small properties/not owning machines personally), it does sound like there is a lot knocking around.

Ideally Id love a few months over there, I bet I could dig up some real goldmines, but much harder to do with only a few weeks. Still, could make some headway.

I don't like the idea, at all, of making contact with some middle man, it automatically would jack the price way up. There has to be a more neutral way of getting stuff done. I'm a firm believer in just knocking on doors (and from what you say about plenty of arcades being around), definitely potential. I'd even be thinking of going into the likes of Capcom itself and just seeing what happens.

My overall impression is that the country is a giant unknown quantity. Its kinda cool in that sense.

Thanks for the impression though, it all helps :)

Yea, that's not Japan, I can't remember the country (China, Indonesia, Malaysia maybe?) but they got rounded up as part of gambling laws.

With regards to cabinet sales there are second hand cab sellers like http://am-sevens.jp/ and probably loads more. Cabs wise they have mostly modern stuff, Only CRT cabs these guys have are New Net City cabs and they're just under £300, bit more for LCD cabs like Lindberghs and double that for a Vewlix.

I'd organise myself a container filled with treats if I had the funds!
