All your scores are registrated as sat on MAME, untill told otherwise.. :)

I thought it was time we had a Donkey Kong Junior high score table here on UKVAC. There are a few of us who get stuck into this awesome game and I started playing this again today after deciding to take a break from playing Donkey Kong.

After managing a high score of 837,500 almost a year ago I fired the cab up earlier today.

It's surprising how difficult it is switching from Donkey Kong to Junior after being so familiar with it and being on the verge of a kill screen and it has to be said, this is such a different game to DK!

Anyhow, the best for today was 325,100

Alex, you know you want to! Tongue

At least we only have to contend with 80 boards with Junior compared to 116 on DK Eric!!

I had ago yesterday and managed 140.000
But really enjoyed playing it again after neglecting it for a few months

I think the main hurdle for me apart from much more practise is the chain lvl
second time round it becomes very busy and you really have to be in the matrix to foresee what is going on.
I always seem to try and wipe-out as many snappers as I can on the first chain,if it doesn't happen I struggle to organise a plan b.
If you know what I mean

Posted By: Guests
Date Posted: 02 Mar 2014 at 9:13pm
Nice score Al....Is that 193k your high score saved?

The chain level is pretty tough Al and the hardest level without any question. Level 4 onwards the snappers are on speed. The other problem is there's only just enough space to allow junior between the birds, if you are sat a pixel two high/low, you'll get hit. Some people use patterns, for example some guys push the keys up from left to right, some go from right to left (I used to) but to be realistic, which ever way you go, be ready to switch chains quickly and like you said if you can hit snappers for points is great, but they respawn from level 4 anyhow.

That's my top score mate
I do always have a pattern but as with this game it doesn't always go to plan
That pixel perfect positioning and re spawning sounds eye boggling
So want to crack the 200,000 mark

Not good Eric, we all get that and it's mighty frustrating Thumbs Down

If you get stressed out Alex drop down to the bottom 3/4's of the chains and hang out there and wait. After 10 birds are released there's a massive gap, then go for it!

Nothing wrong with 190k anyhow....but you're capable of more, you played well at my place.

Nice one Michael!

Hey chaps, there's a ' hard ROM ' available for DK Jr Shocked as if it needs it! The chains level is a joke as there are no safe zones, you have to keep climbing as the birds fly a very tight line and you can't fit between them!! I think i'll give that a miss! Wacko

Parts of their sequence appear to have some sort of pattern but there are also trackers thrown in also which will drop to your location.

Guys, I've just had my biggest game yet! Thumbs Up

No kill screen but I did hit the big 1M - 1034,000

Wiped out on level C - 4 (KS is level F-1) but I was on for 1.2. I recorded the whole game on my webcam so i'll upload some of the game at some point soon. A pity the KS didn't happen this time but the score is more important right now....but I will be trying again soon!

Well played Al. Awesome score.

Have never seen the point of DK Jr .... Found it an irritating and fiddly game. Until this week. The penny has finally dropped. I am immensely sh*t at it, but now find strangely compelling. See how I get on with it over coming months.

Thanks chapsThumbs Up certainly happy to break the 1M at last.

Get stuck in James! Like you said, it is irritating.....but it's genius! Once the game mechanics are understood it becomes highly addictive, even more so than Donkey Kong for me by a fair margin. The chains/keys will always be the biggest problem but it's a decent and rewarding challenge.

Michael, still a long bloody way to go mate but I'm not done yet although I would be satisfied with being in the top 10.

Alex, as you know Jr has been a mind set for us for a while so it's a relief to get a big score after the hours spent on the cab.

Hangover this morn?

Thanks Vic Smile You must be due another bash?

The trouble is the score can't be verified on the DKF as you have to stream live through Twitch even though I have the video here for proof ...although it's not that important at the moment.

Hey Al,

Cheers mate. Yeah I didn't want to risk losing my last man pressing for points especially in the hideout as I was gunning for a kill screen as the 1M was already secured but I blew it.

There are still parts of the game I need to change but learning all the time.

Thumbs Up

Chain lvl
I find the other lvls fairly straight forward if your not to greedy.
The Chain lvl is hard if you can't knock out a few snappers straight away .

Posted By: Guests
Date Posted: 12 Mar 2015 at 7:33am
Well that's no surprise to be honest.

Don't forget when Jr is holding on to one vine, he is smaller than when he's holding on to two vines making him slightly harder to hit....he also moves slower so you can get him to sit exactly where you want him, so the small areas between birds are not so hard to find.

-------------

Posted By: Guests
Date Posted: 12 Mar 2015 at 7:43am
^ I meant he moves slower when climbing, obviously not when descending so try and position yourself for the next wave of birds when going up.....not down ;)

Are we talking like one pixel here ?

Posted By: Hurray Banana
Date Posted: 12 Mar 2015 at 8:42am
I think there is 2 or 3 pixels of safe in both the top and bottom areas, Al would know better

Posted By: Guests
Date Posted: 12 Mar 2015 at 8:47am
Yeah Eric, that's about right, the top gap is real tight but you get an extra couple if your holding onto one vine as opposed to two. When he's grabbing both vines the guy is pretty stretched out and he's visually bigger, check it out.

Don't forget, when you reach level 4 the snappers re spawn so get used to those guys being around....and they re spawn on the left so be careful when you hit them with the left fruit to get ready to move it.

Didn't know about the smaller hit box when on single chain, that's a nice tip Al.

Another tip for the chains - keep moving. If you're waiting for the birds to come down, use the gaps to push keys up so far instead of hanging around wasting time, get junior working it, but don't rush, obviously if you're not sure, wait!
Also, when the snappers are going down, you can still push high keys up to the locks, just wait until the dudes have gone past and get onto it! Just keep a keen eye on when they make their return, junior climbs faster than snappers using two hands.

It doesn't matter how good you get at htis level......you will always lose lives here!! It's basically Juniors equivalent of DK's barrel board....and it sucks just as bad!!!

Yeah not an easy level, grabbing the moving platform on the first super jump helps, but that's never easy either, I struggle here dude and have to learn this again.
