Subject: Senior Member group changes
Date Posted: 11 Jan 2019 at 11:23am
Hi guys,

We're going to be making some changes to the groupings in place.   Roughly speaking these are;

1) Senior Member group entry will now require 5000 points

2) New group 'User' which will require 500 points (same as current setting for Senior Member).

We've had a number of comments form forum users about the Senior Member group being a bit misleading because it really doesn't take long to get up to 500 points.   You can go from New User to Senior Member in a few weeks easily. This figure was picked back when we relaunched the forum and the traffic was much lower than it is now.   Thanks to the success you guys have made the forum this figure no longer makes sense!

We can of course manually bump anyone who lands in the wrong group.  If you feel you're not correctly assigned just let me or any of the other mods/admins know.

End of line

Dan

almost got to the 500 before the change, but sounds reasonable :)

I'm okay with it but have some doubts whether I fully agree with it.

For example, I'm a member for over 7 years and posted over 1,200 times but points = 1800 so I won't be classed as a senior member (Even though I think I should be). Yet someone who's a member for 6 month with a couple of hundred posts and 5000+ points is senior?

I know the points design is to reflect the "Quality" posts so understand to some degree.

As I said I'm okay with it Smile It won't keep me up at night lol.

Its taken me 6 months to get to senior member. I have been contributing as much as I can, Pretty much every day. It will take me another 4 1/2 years to get there again now Angry

How much do I have to do ??

Dave.

P.S I think the senior is a little misleading. I would say a Senior member would be based on time with an account woudnt it ?? Not on points or likes ?? Just saying :-)

It doesn’t bother me what group I’m in, but imo, 5000 points seems a bit high.
I fully agree that only 500 points is too low to be in the senior member group, put it would take a hell of a long time to get to 5000.

Perhaps somewhere in the region of 2000-2500 points could be used instead?

I'll literally never be a senior member again LOL

I totally agree with this change Thumbs Up

As a reminder is it 1 Post = 1 Point or does "maths" somehow come into it?

Posted By: Kev A
Date Posted: 11 Jan 2019 at 2:25pm
While I think this is an improvement, 5000 points does seem a little high, there must be a fair few users who have a couple of thousand posts and been here years that wont be classed as senior.

It doesn't gain you anything!  It's not like you get special "Senior Member" raid discounts! LOL

It really doesn't make any difference to anything at all.

The question is why aren't you?

Does everyone know you get 4500 points just for joining the slack channel?

Not saying this will happen and I will speak to the other mods and admins. But does everyone like Senior Member? Should it be called something different?

Should there be some kind of legend 'killscreen' status that J+ had?

I'll take a look at the ladder system later and points needed for each step and share internally with the team. Maybe we can do something more with it on top of fixing the 500 point issue.

We'll also be clear on the point system and report the points you get if someone says thanks to your post or you get a thread rating etc etc.

Since this came up a quick question (might be noobish but anyway)

What are the feedback stars for? Trading? Or not? Asking cause I've done a number of trades on this forum but I don't know if this is related to this or not.

Thanks.

Yeah its for leaving feedback when buying and selling, although its not used nearly enough, very useful feature

And where do you do this? I can't find a forum section related to feedback.

If you click on another users name and go to members profile there is a link to feedback, like this...

Edit: like muddy said ^^^^

Could you make make a few diff status for like every 1000 or would that be a pain to do? Then at 5000 have something like killscreen like you said

I think it would be even better if we could update the members photos so we can remember who everyone is :)

It sounds like a good idea ,especially where buying and selling is involved ,and your using it as a guide to an extent
Maybe 5000 is too high as said and 500 too low for sure .

Posted By: Bensonrad
Date Posted: 12 Jan 2019 at 8:46am
Does not bother me so much, so long as it does not increase the number of noise posts (far too many of these in the trading/sale section), but agree with the consensus 500 is very low, 5000 is pretty high, would be nice to have different levels every 500 or 1000.

The feedback system should be encouraged & promoted, its really good, but not enough people use it or realise its there.

Just realised I've reached my 10 year anniversary here, blimey time has flown by.

Pah!
I am approaching 17 years and still haven't achieved 1,000 pts.
To get to 5,000 at that rate I will need to live to be 125...

ok maybe not.... but.....  how about the possibility to use even just a little bigger sized avatars?

100 x 100 pixels:

It's taken me 2.5 years to get to "Senior Member", so if it moves to 5000 then I will be a "groupie" until the day I can't lift a soldering iron or remember how to code (22.5 years)

I do agree though 500 can be hit easily if you post a lot in For Sale / Valuations. You could always exclude certain sections of the forum from the points tally. It really depends on what you want the status to reflect.

I would say any system is ultimately open to dodgey behaviour just as it is with the current scoring system.
Perhaps an additional function to allow people to downvote posts anonymously, as well as the current 'thank' button on posts might even things out in some cases.
But then that is open to abuse also. Some people would downvote simply because they disagree, not that the content of the post is wrong. It's not a simple thing to please everyone all of the time.

For instance if I reply to Aaron and say his RomPatcher is ace, I get a point, but he gets none.
If I simply click the teeny 'thanks' button at the top of the post, he gets 5 points, but I get none.

Ultimately, you can't beat actually meeting people face-to-face at an event in person to find out what people are really like. A number on a forum is just a dumb number really.

It's not a badge of honour... You don't get treated any different at events, etc. .. As everyone knows you join somewhere get to know people and there you go... There is one exception though... If you know Jodo then you should be given £1,000,000 if you admit to it... ??

The thanks button doesnt appear on the mobile view, I had no idea it existed.

Add downvoting and I'd have to seriously reconsider ever visiting here again. It inevitably leads to a toxic environment.
