Subject: DEPOSIT TAKEN: Lovely Afterburner
Date Posted: 04 Feb 2019 at 3:33pm
Edit: Saturday 17 Feb: Deposit taken.
Edit: Friday 16 Feb. Reduced to £850.

I have this coming in on the AC17 container which should be at Arcade Club in a few weeks.

Why the sale? I managed to locate a few personal grails for AC17 *after* committing to this Afterburner so I need to balance my books, which means this has to fall out the end of the bed. A shame for me because I love Afterburner... but the other stuff I love more.

These are Ken's original sales pics. Original AC17 thread here:

http://www.ukvac.com/forum/ac17-shipment-us-to-uk-299-full_topic366783.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.ukvac.com/forum/ac17-shipment-us-to-uk-299-full_topic366783.html

Asking £950. Covers me (well, sort of) for purchase price and import fees but with a chunk of change left over in the your favour, so you will be saving money over and above importing directly. Additionally, I will pay for a power conversion and a go-through by Andy's boys. So you will have a ready to go, super-tidy Afterburner to collect from Arcade Club whenever the work has been done.

For those who have an issue with such things, please note that this is not being flipped for profit.

If you missed out on it first time round, now's your chance.

Just a little thread bump ahead of the witching hour, which is when all of us make our very best arcade cab buying decisions. Maybe you've had a beer or two; maybe you caught the last half of Top Gun or Iron Eagle... maybe, just maybe, you need an Afterburner.

Little surprised myself to be honest. I thought it could be because potential buyers might want to inspect before committing, but then this is essentially the same deal as buying direct from Ken and importing with Andy... but slightly cheaper and with the power conversion thrown in for free to boot. Anyway, it's going back to 1K on Monday morning. I'd very much like to sell it, but I ain't desperate :)

ICYMI. Sunday afternoon bump. Reduced to £900. Back to 1K in the morning.

You are buying a fully sorted Afterburner (if for some reason it has stopped working in transit then Arcade Club will make it work, plus a power conversion, plus PAT testing, all on my dime).

Due in with Andy in a few weeks.

It does look lovely and I want one but the last one on here in great condition went for under 500 (sold to chopper) People here are gonna search the same as me and look to see what it last sold at. All of us will go higher by a bit as prices move on but 1k is more than double the last sale price. Might be worth you keeping it for a while? Sorry

Yup. All fair points. I am aware that this is a fair bit steeper than some of the others sold recently, but I'd counter that this is in much better cosmetic condition. That's a big factor for me personally when buying any cab... but perhaps not for others. I'm happy to take sensible offers and take a small hit on this in order to shore up other purchases... But yeah, may keep it otherwise. Definitely not on a mission to set the new market price, although these things really are variable dependent on many factors. I'll quit with the bumps for now :)

The downside of importing cabs that are not that rare in the uk is that once all the fees taxes power conversions have been sorted you are in for way over what they are actually worth in the uk when one does eventually come up for sale

As others have said if you have the space and dont need the cash i would just keep it

Its a strange one because theres times you dont see afterburner for ages and wanted ads are up its just lately loads popped up but its the same with outrun sometimes.. I think its a good price for a classic game especially when these type of games cant be played properly without the original cabs.
I bet soon as a find a paperboy a couple will pop up

Cheers Steven, appreciated. Me too mate, but then I would say that I suppose. I was happy to pay what I paid originally ($950, which is about £730 as of this minute) because it's a really tidy cab (fairly sure Ken sent me higher-res pics so will update the thread with those when I find them) and I do get why some folk take the "last one sold for..." line because it makes sense up to a point. I also get why people object to sellers wanting to get back what they put into a cab, regardless of deemed UK aggregate value... but we all know that these are ageing machines. One is not the same as the next.

The most I'll take a hit on is the import fee because I have plenty of other stuff heading to Andy, so fully prepared to say goodbye to that in the grander scheme of things. It all works out in the end. Not in this hobby to turn a profit, just sorting out the sock drawer, so to speak.

Seriously???  I personally think that's one of the things that make UKVAC better than KLOV, not having to open threads only to read a pointless GLWS post.  KLOV threads are replete with that, just read the PP FPGA thread, most of it is pointless wrt the topic.  People here generally post when they have something to add to a topic not just general flim flam to bump threads.   IMO this Afterburner isn't selling cos of the price and the fact it's not even on shore yet.   No amount of thread bumping is going to change that.

This is jm2pw, may or may not be right and no offence is intended.

You'll note that Ken's cabs are not usually on shore prior to purchase. This originally being one of his, you'll no doubt be able to follow my train of thought with this one. Please feel free to unwrap the "jm2pw" acronym for me I'll let you know whether I'm offended or not.

Something I’d do if it was staying with me.

The aim is to sell before it needs to be delivered to me from AC, at least saving me transportation fees. If it gets as far as my house then I’ll be holding it for a while and enjoying it :)

Hi
I have heard that Martin may be picking this up from AC on Friday.  Due to a change in my circumstances, I am offering it up for sale to a new buyer, same price as I paid (£850).

It is a beauty and I am sure I will regret it but needs must.

Someone has first dibs on this till Thursday, if interested in it please send me PM Smile

Thanks

Hi guys
I know I advertised the afterburner a few weeks back after buying it a few months ago. Unfortunately the one that has now been delivered to me is the wrong one.   This one doesn't work and also is very shabby compared to the one I paid for, it has cracks, dents, missing and ripped artwork.

I am still awaiting a response from the courier as to when the correct cab will be delivered to me after all this time.   I don't really need this stress any more and have definitely fallen out of love for AF due to all of this hassle, so I am offering it up for sale again if anyone wants mine (the nice and working one LOL) before it gets here.

CheersSmile
Dan

Scant consolation to Dan, but this was an unfortunate mixup at Arcade Club. All parties aware. There are more pics of the (correct) cab on Ken's Flickr page, which will obviously be of interest to any prospective buyer.

OK, heading into June (and bearing in mind I paid for this machine back in February) and I am still waiting to hear from Martin or anyone when the correct machine I bought (which has cost me £850 plus £85 delivery) will be with me.

I have been told by Andy that Martin will deliver it ASAP but I have had no reply from Martin at all despite my messages.  People who know me are aware I am not in good health right now, and this added stress is really not good for me.

Could someone finally please PM me to explain what caused this whole mix-up so we can hope it doesnt happen to anyone else again?

If anyone knew the full situation of this they would not believe my luck.  The machine I purchased prior to this was also from Kidyamlo (I am not pointing any blame here) and this was an Asteroids cocktail that I also paid top dollar for, £850, and I have the sale details below.

Sold to me fully working with a NOS monitor from long standing member Bonehead, and delivery strictly only by Martin, PCB fully refurbished etc etc, it also arrived non-working!

After a few minutes the game cuts out.  Kidyamlo has since told me he only played it a few minutes so he wasn't aware of this.

I am fortunate in having some good friends on here who are trying to help me get this Asteroids working, but the fact remains I have lost out once again in quick succession, hence my disappointment.  As it stands I have now paid £1700 plus £170 in delivery fees for these two broken machines.

I hate going public about anything like this but when I am continuously let down and not updated I hope people realise this is about the only thing I can do to try and resolve this.

Cheers
Dan

NB. Priced at a point where what they actually owe me meets what I consider to be fair. Which is a roundabout way of saying that I'll be taking a small hit on both of them. Not a fire sale so they’ll stay stored if nobody is interested. Completely forgot to take photos of them working before moving them into storage, sorry.

Maybe the afterburner could be sent with a different courier if it’s ready and waiting to go ?
Or did the mix up occur in USA and being sorted there ,then to Andy then martin and to yourself .
It does all seem like genuine mistakes ,it’s a nightmare when you get a run like this
I hope it’s sorted soon and would try not to let it affect your health

Been there before.

I had a lovely Afterburner delivered from Italy on a pallet. It arrived without the pallet and with a smashed side panel. Only consolation was they gave me 50% of the cost back with no arguments

For the record:

I've maintained direct contact with all parties (Ken, Andy, Martin, Dan) regarding the Afterburner. Strictly speaking I have no obligation to do so, but I'm cognisant (though not fully versed - I only know him through the forum, not personally) of Dan's health issues so decided that this was the right thing to do. Dan messaged me just this morning and I have replied.

The mix-up, so far as I have been led to believe, occurred at Arcade Club. Two Afterburners came in on the same shipment and the incorrect cab was delivered to Dan.

As mentioned to Dan this morning, I still have six cabs at AC. I made sure the two I sold on prior to the container landing (Afterburner and Frogger) were dealt with and shipped out first.

The cab was indeed purchased in Jan, but the container didn't land at AC for a while after that.

The Asteroids was sold in good faith and fully operational (edit: a wholly unrelated transaction from 2018).

If we are talking bad luck, talk to me. Bought a hang on cab, but when delivered sound failed, and then 4 minutes later, smoke from chassis, and a bang! Cab was missing its bottom, and was cleverly covered up with some wood. £750 down the drain, plus £85 delivery. Then bought a battlezone, missing most of the innards! I would only buy now from trusted members on here. Would never buy a cab on Ebay ever again.

I've not bought many working machines, Op Wolf supposed to be but when guy dropped it off it hadn't been tested properly with sparking eht and faulty pcb, seller was cool though as he ended up delivering it free from Bridlington

OutRun DLX I picked up, seen it working, played it, got it back in van, monitor dead. Took me ages to find the Diode that was pretty much broke in half, so on it's last legs when plugged in and transit must of finished it off

720 was working fine, I saw it working when picked up myself, by time I got home it was dead, turned out to be fuse that had gone open circuit, looked fine but wire one end where it's soldered to the end cap has broke off or just gone from age, guy had it in his garage for years never had issue he said, 2 months and the pcb was faulty and the monitor going dark intermitant and it's been in warm house since I had it

Just how it goes with these old machines unfortunately, so I started buying machines that don't work or part working

Don't know how you can end up with so many bad machines Chopper, never had luck like that with mine, worst is no back door or wrong ones that the seller don't say anything about, then again nearly all I collect myself, best way and part of the fun I thoughtSmile

Just to add further to this. To smooth things over as much as possible, I took a look at the Asteroids PCB for Dan as a favour a few weeks back at no cost to him, and found
a bad OP-amp in the analogue output section (common failure point).

This was repaired and sent back to Dan.

I'm certain this PCB was working prior to sale and the failure was just bad timing.

I'm only adding this to counter any feeling that the cab was sold on with known faults.

I've had the pleasure of dealing with kidyamio a couple of times and found him to be pain free and honest.

I'll also add that if you're in this hobby, cabs arriving dead is all part of the "fun" (I keep reminding myself).

It's happened twice to me with cabs I've bought, and once with a cab I sold.

Don't stress Dan, sure it will be sorted out, Martin's always rushed off his feet as you probably know

It is disappointing when things don't work, and the mix up on top most would be feeling the same, specially when paying good money

+1 for the things falling apart. My ££££ outrun DLX was brilliant for about 4 hours, then one of the video planes failed and that was it. Got it fixed for more ££££ but the sound custom then failed too and that's unfortunately the way it's stayed. That's just what you're investing in!

Anyway lovely to hear people have rallied around to sort it.

It’s a shame that this happened to Dan, but it will get sorted. Nobody involved is abdicating responsibility or dragging their heels. Bad timing in some ways because of Leeds AC opening its doors tomorrow, but things will get done. Time moves in slow motion in vintage arcade collecting circles, just the nature of the hobby for reasons too obvious to even bother listing. The Asteroids is a different matter entirely and I was initially confused as to why that was rolled into the Afterburner mismatch issue, but I think everybody involved is now on the same page. Had my fair share of things arriving not exactly as described, and also plain bad luck. I’m a picky f**ker but also becoming more sanguine the longer I collect. It is what it is.
