That's where you went wrong, in his own words "an email is *never* just one reply - its always a barrage of replies with more questions."

4-5 years? Could've been worse, like waiting for the FPGA version. Tongue

Sorry, couldn't resist.

You would have to be crazy to deal with someone like that.   I hope you get it back but after 5 years it looks like he has sold it to help pay his mortgage from that previous post.

Look at the money he’s saved you, on getting it repaired repeatedly over the last 5 years lol
The post is a bit slow at the minute Also .

Hope you get it back soon

I hope you are not saying Pole Position is unreliable!!

I have had mine a year now and it has only caught light twice!!

I am looking on the bright side, I have not had to run a heater in my Workshop
since I got it running.

All that heat from the AR2s and Power Brick, feels so much hotter than a 3KW Fan Heater.

LOLLOLLOL

See, a lot of people who don't know anything about Pole Position cabs would probably think you're just joking saying that! LOL

Still not returned after this reply last Sunday.

Board will leave Monday or Tuesday - week from hell dealing, not going into detail
Maybe he’s not well?
I’d be so interested to know where my board actually is? Mmm

Can't help you on current status of PCB which I'm sure will get resolved but check out the release of Pi Position. Nice solution for your cab and plug and play.

All gone as far as I could see, hopefully they'll be another batch.   Every PP owner will want one of these until Adam finally releases the FPGA version.

Thats a shame. I assume that this is on KLOV? I'd like to register my interest in one.

This Pi Position sounds all very well,
but were is the sense of hope, anticipation, funny burning smell and a little smoke
that the original hardware seems to give off.

And that is even before you even switch it on!

I have said it before and I will say it again, modern reliability is so tedious!   LOL

Normally I don't disclose details between myself and a client but so that the final outcome doesn't get distorted here is a copy of the note I have included in the box:

--- BEGIN NOTE ---

POLE POSITION PCB SET

In this box:

1 x Pole Position CPU PCB - working

1 x Pole Position VIDEO PCB - not working

1 x Pole Position interconnect PCB

These are a matched serial number set.

Notes for whomever takes on this repair down the line.

CPU PCB

Replaced: 1 x Z80 CPU

1 x 6116 2k SRAM in SOUND section*

1 x 2732 EPROM in SOUND CPU

1 x Namco Custom 53

1 x Namco Custom 06

1 x Namco Custom 08

1 x Namco Custom 10 in SUB CPU (can’t remember exactly which one)

1 x PAL in SOUND section

2 x 2n3904 transistors in acid damaged battery section

This board will now boot up and pass tests with a working video pcb attached.

VIDEO PCB

Replaced: 5 x 2114 1k SRAM

Patched bad traces underneath which were not present

This board will generate RAM 24 error when connected to any known working CPU board which indicates a problem with RAM at 7H which has been replaced.  Swapping its adjacent partner ram or any of the other socketed ram chips will remain in same state.  The chip is known to work and matches the correct speed for the board as per known problems with pole position boards.  All signals to and from 7H are present and no shorts on the bus.  The adjacent 245 buffer/driver appears good.  A capture of signals coming out of it back to the sub-cpu on the CPU board has been done with a scope and two probes triggering off the /DIR signal on the 245 at 6H.  I have no clue what is now causing this issue.

Good luck to whoever takes this on.

--- END OF NOTE ---

I forgot to add in the original note that the * next to the 6116 is that i've not included a battery backed ram chip - you can obtain a DALLAS DS1220 or similar from many outlets if you want the scores to be backed up between power cycles - i'm sure whoever completes the repair can and likely will swap that part.

As Leon has chosen to make the video public to the community i've also included an interconnect belonging to another customer outside the community who was happy to help given the circumstances.

Note to all - I haven't asked for a penny for the above parts or the time i've spent on this board.

And for completeness for, tracking details below:

Just as a side note.

I have heard from one of the guys that will be given a Pole Position FPGA to test by Adam Courchesne.
It is still moving along.

Not stalled again, as many of us feared.

Fingers Crossed.

Very useful information, there was a cartoon based on Pole position, licensed from namco. Had practically nothing to do with the game though besides a cash-in
