27" Vertical Cab - CNC

Hi all,

At the end of last year I spent considerable time designing a compact 27" vertical cab for some old 27" iMac screens that I have at work. The screens have proper glass covers and didn't want to see them go to waste. Once happy with the design everything was flattened and converted to 2D DXF files together with correct layers for holes, pilot holes, cam locks and t-molding. I thought that was the hard part done!

Sadly, I must have contacted over 20 CNC companies and unfortunately none of them seem to be able to cut it for one reason or another. Most either don't have all the tools, material (12 & 18mm black melamine) or willingness to cut and then do the finishing work - holes, cam locks..etc.

I am really looking for some advice from anyone who has built a cab before and might have some guidance on the best way forward or even someone who might be able to cut and finish this project :D

Ok interesting update this, it seems that I managed to find someone to cut it today! Looks like this will be a build thread. I have ordered 2.

Still deciding on the system, either a (compact) genuine jamma board or possibly a Mister...

Out of interest, how much did it cost you to get cut.
I have been thinking of something similar as a bit of fun as I have a spare mini PC and 27" monitor, I was thinking of some kind of shell for it, maybe wall mounted, to do a dedicated digital Ice Cold Beer.

Sadly not cheap! It was about £320 +VAT including materials for 1 unit, that went up to about £360 +VAT for 2 units, so I went with that.
Unfortunately low volume doesn't make much sense with what I have designed.

To be honest mine was complicated by cam locks with edge drilling and tmoulding slots. If you could design it all in 18mm MDF (12mm melamine is almost impossible to find) and do the connecting / t-molding yourself I think it would be much much cheaper and easier to get it cut.
