Best advice I've got over my collecting days;
1) Check the power is right first.
2) The Mark 1 eyeball is the best/first tool to use when fixing PCB's
3) Don't neglect the basic checks first. I still forget this one, so many times I've assumed a complex reason for something not working and it's turned out to be something simple that I forgot to check.
4) Learn to solder/desolder on something you don't mind destroying. It takes time and practice to get any good at it.
5) Whatever game it is, it WILL break down sooner or later. Assume you'll have to fix it (cos that guy who fixes the game now will have gone by the time you need him).
