Can't speak for all Atari cabs but the Happs Black Pica vinyl is a very close match to the Return of Jedi cab finish.

Do you have a UK source / link for this please? I can only find the US link...

Jodo - If we can get this stuff in the Uk, do you want to go splits on some?

Absolutely yes

It's vinyl we are all after - correct? As opposed to formica?

Just to help with the confusion, laminate/formica is what you see on kitchen worktops. It is very hard wearing but very brittle, and it is pretty much impossible to bend round corners without cracking. You would need to glue it down. It gives a great finish - better than paint, and is very good at hiding imperfections on a surface. I see it as a very thin 0.7mm layer of wood, and it is bloody hard to cut!

Vinyl on the otherhand is very flexible material and is the same thing you see on signs, banners, decals. Again it can give a good finish but imperfections are hard to hide. You really need a smooth surface to apply it too. I see this as a fabric type material.

The material that's used on an Atari Asteroids I would say is a vinyl with a leather finish.

If you look on something like Quarter Arcade you will find something like Black Vinyl (Morocco style), which is suitable for many arcade games, and I would say Asteroids is probably one of them

HTH

BTW If you ever want Formica I know a great place in Manchester

I ordered from:

SUZO-HAPP GROUP
Office: +44 208 391 7700 | Fax: +44 208 391 7760
Direct Office: +44 208 391 7718 | Direct Fax: +44 208 391 7763
Steph.Thorbes@suzohapp.co.uk| www.suzohapp.com

Steph sent me samples of all the different types of vinyl. Be warned - it is VERY expensive... I must have spent around £400 to cover the Jedi. But it looks just likes the original...

I need some black vinyl for my Narc, also need to re-do the front of a euro millipede too, that uses formica, but I am going to have to replace the whole front so thinking I might get away vinyl there too.

I got my role of black formica laminate at a construction wholesale (in The Netherlands, I suppose similar English stores carry it also). I will use it for the frontpanels of Asteorids, Breakout, Centipede. Will look great, I hope.
