Saw this today and it reminded me of all those times when as a young naive gamer I'd pickup a new Spectrum game, see the awesome front cover, wait 10 minutes for it to load and end up playing a game that looked like I'd done the art

Good old Atari VCS 2600 games. You wouldn't give them space on your mobile phones nowadays! Hard to believe they were over £30 a pop in their time!

I swear the "Commando" box art for the C64 version was a painting. Seriously - at 9 years old it bothered me even then that it was clearly not the game I was playing.

The whole thing is/was a rip off. My favourite were spectrum games with pictures of the arcade or c64 versions on the back. I think US Gold were intentionally misleading with that kind of thing, spy hunter springs to mind though I'd have to dig the case out to be sure. That and the applling copy protection device on the Spectrum version of Elite, and the even an early batch of duff games for the Amiga where the copy protection stopped the game working properly pretty much killed my enthusiasm for buying and original games at that time....

the 2600 kinda has to be the worst because its graphics capabilities are the worst. Gotta admire the audacity of these companies.

The worst thing for me was getting a home port of an arcade game that missed the mark completely. I actually paid for 1943, conversion by probe on the Atari ST. It was AWFUL. The only upside being you could edit the game graphics in degas elite. Cue flying dog turds.

I used to have a good business in the 80's buying and selling 2600 carts, made a fair bit to continue my arcade love

The worst games were definately the Spectrum games. You used to get an arcade screenshot on the back and when you played the game it was nothing like what you imagined it to be. For example

and the reality:
