As I'm changing jobs and was heavily reliant on my work phone, I went out and got a reasonably good and cheap sim-free Nokia android phone (£59) from carphonewarehouse:

If you only want to make calls, send texts, read emails, do some light browsing and perhaps use WhatsApp, then this seems like a good purchase and I recommend it. At £59 it's very good value.
To go with that I got myself a giffgaff simcard and am paying £10 a month for unlimited calls, texts and 3GB of data on a rolling contract (I can change to different package anytime). If you want to get a giffgaff sim then use my link and we'll both get a fiver credit as well:
