Display a PAL TV signal on a 15KHz Monitor?

Long story short, I'm looking into the feasibility of playing Super Street fighter 4 on my arcade machine (which has a Hanty MTC900 in it).

So far I've concluded that the best route would be to use the SCART output on the PS3 (not the HDMI as I first presumed). Get a SCART to RGBLR Component cable and... well that's as far as I've got

.

I've read you can use the scart input on standard res TV to play arcade PCBs. Does it work the other way?Can I take a standard res RGB signal and successfully run it on my Hanty?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers guys.

If you just feed in scart to jamma rgb its not great. basically the scart signal is weaker than jamma, and theres no voltage clamp.

what this means is that you need to crank up the contrast to max, and the screen still looks washed out, plus it varies in brightness due to the lack of aformentioned clamp (works like a reference voltage afaik).

lots of detail plus schematics of adaptors here;

http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/vga2arc/vga2arc.htm

it goes beyond what i wanted to build so i bought one of his premade adaptors from this thread on shmups;

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28069

the older 240p consoles (saturn, ps1) look great. I mainly use it for the cheaper 'arcade perfect' versions of garegga and raiden dx

the 480i output by later consoles - ps2 and xbox (and i presume the ps3) doesn't work well with the mtc9000 in my horizontal cab - its flickery and doesnt sync well. but it looks fine on the sanwa in my candy cab (15khz one not a multisync) raiden 3 is particularly nice.

SO, in conclusion

i dont really think your hanty 900 will be up to the 480i output from a ps3, even with an appropriate adapter. Id need to look into the output of a ps3 in more detail but its bedtime i only logged in to check messages ;)

Ok, so I'm looking into possibly building myself a little something to make this actually happen (PS3 Street Fighter 4 and other online fighting games on my 15KHz cab that is
smiley15.gif
). I think I've got a grip on every aspect except this one:

But I'm a bit bamboozled by SCART and frequency/sync?

Am I right in understanding that SCART takes a composite Sync feed from the composite video pin? In which case I need to include the composite video into my plans...?

Thanks.

yeah use comp out as sync. jamma needs rgb sync and ground - can usually tie video ground to common ground.

id try it without building any circuitry first, will at least tell you if the sync and 480i is acceptable to the hantarex.

Wicked! Well I'll be placing a small order with Ultimarc soon, so will add a Video amp to it and get experimenting. But all being well, this is my plan:

PS3_Arcade_Project_Box.jpg

I think it should work, but let me know if you think I've overlooked anything.

Ok, I'm running this topic over on the other side too and someone suggested the monitor might not understand the composite from the SCART as it will also contain video. Therefore the video would need to be stripped out of the composite video signal to leave just a composite sync signal for my Hanty to understand. He linked this:

http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/other/sync.htm

It looks real simple, so I guess I'd pop that after the SCART input and before the Ultimarc Video Amp.

Edit: So my PS3/JAMMA box should look something more like this:

PS3_Arcade_Project_Box_Revised.jpg

I know it's far from a textbook circuit diagram, but I'm sure you catch my drift. Sound & Video Goes left to right to the JAMMA harness, game controls go from the JAMMA harness (right to left) to the USB ports and out to the PS3.

Cant remember if i used the sync stripper or not, don't think so.

Basically evertything you want to do is what viletims adapter does. I bought one as in the time/money equation it was way cheaper.

If you do build it all yourself you may need a dummy load on the arcade psu for it to fire up and power the video amp & inverter. For me one generic jamma brick needed a 5w load, the hantarex psu in the video wiz needed 10w. used ceramic power resistors they get v. hot. the ex-neogeo brick in the test rig didnt need a dummy load though, so you may be lucky. Id plop an LED in there somewhere to show you're getting power.

still aint tackled the fact that your hantarex monitor will struggle with 480i .... actually 576i on a pal console i'd forgot about that. They don't like interlaced signals and the PS3 wont output any lower than that afaik.

grobda mate, you're spot on. TheSharkfactor's (well Sony actually
smiley24.gif
) just gone and poo'd all over my Monday morning
smiley36.gif
. I was driving to work daydreaming about spending some time over Xmas playing SSF4AE on my cab, online. I get to work, check in on J+ and he's posted about the issue of the European PS3 only outputs to 576 minimum which my Hanty won't take. And the worst thing is, Sharky's always right. He's a top bloke. I call him the Obi Wan Kenobi of MAME and any other kinds of Console-in-Cab hacking.

Tells me to get a candy with a tri-sync monitor, an Xbox360 and with minimal tinkering, it's almost as easy as plug and play. He's right of course, and I've spent loads of money over the last few years building up my PS3 game collection. I guess Super Street Fighter 4 in the cab will have to wait

So to update in case anyone was following this. We've thrashed it out over on J+ and established that using the SCART (not the HDMI) is ok, it outputs at 480p.

Grobda plugged his PS3 into Viletim's SCART to JAMMA device and tested it on the Hanty Polo in his Video Wizard. All was good.

Here's the device:

http://etim.net.au/scart2arcV20/scart2arc2.htm

Here's the video: (Note the screen flicker is the camera's frame conflicting with the monitor's refresh rate not the screen actually flickering as a result of the PS3's output conflicting with the 15Hz)

So it looks as though this could be a possibility after all. I still believe my initial idea would work, but given the price of the Viletim device, it could be worth the extra money just to have something a little more pucka and less Heath Robinson.

Only question I still have is does Viletim's device support 24KHz and 31KHz monitors too? Not that I have any, but it would be nice to know.

its output at 576i not 480p (the i is important here). the adapter is only for 15khz afaik.

the best way to play SSFIV is to use the arcade version. It runs on pc hardware and is only protected by a USB dongle, which has been cracked.

Might be easier than the hassle of a PS3 to JAMMA.

I've considered this Alpha. But my current MAME PC is truly antique. One of the first Pentium-4s with the very first ArcadeVGA. My MAME PC itself is Retro
smiley36.gif
.

So I'd have to buy a higher spec PC like a dual core, which would likely cost £70-80 on eBay. Consider a new ArcadeVGA or spend a long time learning and faffing with Soft-15K.

Also I wanna play some other PS3 fighting games on the cab (some of the modified re-releases of various Street Fighter games and also potentially the Wii with Tatsunoko vs Capcom). So I now think the Viletim (which will probably work out to be about £100 after postage) may well actually be my best solution.
