Trying to find a source for a programmed U8 chip for a system 3 NOES machine.

I might be barking up the wrong tree though so please read.

Bought a NOES machine that has two solid led's only. One on the CPU and one on the DMD driver.
Searching shows two conflicting views... One said that the system 3 main board will boot with just 5 volts etc and another source said you cannot boot a system 3 cpu without the dmd board connected?

I can see evidence of someone playing in this machine with connectors and I know that unplugging the dmd while the game is on will fry the U8.

I do not have garbage on the dmd... I have nothing at all.

Backbox lights up and the GI on the PF is lit. Thats all she wrote...

Done the usual 5 volts issue with the cap and have a lovely steady 5.03v. This may have gone higher before though.

Maybe I need a whole new dmd driver as this shows signs of many tampering sessions...

Help? cheers

I have a gottlieb big hurt, which is also a system 3 - must admit I have not tried it without everything plugged in though.

better go and see what U8 is ....

I'm in Diss, so not too far away!

sorry, not had a chance yet - I see it's a PAL or GAL, depends how it's used as to whether it can be cracked

If it's socketed, I'll give it a go and see (if it's not then it's staying where it is I am afraid!)

yeah don't remove the u8 mate,

Was just interested to see if the main board would boot without the other boards attached.

Thanks

let me go find the manual and see if it shows where it fits (and maybe what it's meant to do)

ok, well from the looks of it it would be dumpable, it *may* be possible to recreate it without needing to remove it, since it's main function seems to be address mapping.

inputs
1 = Theta 2 (phase clock)
2 = Q4 (output from U14 - interestingly labelled Q4 at GAL, but from Q3 of U14?) - it's a latch
3 = R/W
5-9 = A11-A15
11 = DE

outputs
12 is dotclock, which on the schematics says (Theta 2 or /DE) - so that is one equation!
13 = A18 to rom U3 (A14 to A17 come from U14 via U12, which is controlled by this GAL)
14 = /IOPORT
15 = /OPORT
16 = /FIXED
17 = /RAM
18 = /ROM
19 = /CRTC

so if this is emulated in pinmame so we can get the addressess, then we can make a pretty good guess at what the equations are.

14-19 straight mapping address lines to select
13 must drive when /FIXED is high (since it goes to switch on U12 which controls Q0-Q3)
will output whatever is on Q4 in this case, probably high otherwise (since Q1-Q3 also high)
12 conveniently tells us on the schematic - (clock2 OR /DE)

if it's removable, it's dumpable - if it's not I reckon we could re-create it anyway!

as a sideline, it looks like it only needs 5v to run so it could probably be fired up on the bench for testing / fixing!

on the whole it's a fairly simple circuit with not too much to go wrong

just saw you next question - the IO to the DMD board has 8 bits of data from the CPU board, but also has 3 lines back to it, so it would be able to tell if it wasn't plugged in

whether it stops it working though would depend on the code - whether they put a wait loop in to wait until it's ready or not.

Thanks very much, A little over my head I think but I get the gist of it.

I think on this game the CPU board wont boot without the dmd driver fitted and functioning.

The two sound boards have no led's at all.

I am going to search what each pin voltage should be and go from there to trace things back. I have repaired the opto board underneath the PF, Ordered a high voltage rebuild kit from PBR for the DMD driver.

Had a fiddle with the auxiliary power supply last night and I think? its working.

I have been teaching myself as I go along so still have alot to learn.

If it's the gal chips for DMD board and is the same as street fighter 2 I have some brand new one's, but they were expensive

Ronnie

Thanks very much.

Gal chip is the one that plugs in rather then solder? then yes please.

Please pm me
