Hiya,

I've got this old pc but it's a bit noisy. Here's the spec:

  • Intel i5-3330
  • 8GB ram Crucial
  • 256GB ssd
  • Gigabyte H61N-USB3 motherboard
  • Pemtium psu, model: 500U
It's currently running what I think is the stock heatsink and fan on the cpu and makes a lot of noise, the fan is constantly changing speed every few minutes. Before I apply some new thermal paste, was wondering if anyone had any advice on a new compatible heatsink and fan? I've not yet ventured away from stock coolers and it seems there's a lot of choices nowadays. Would prefer as quiet as possible.

The psu also is noisy though it's a constant noise/fan speed - is there a cooler/quieter psu that you'd recommend? Bonus points for smaller physical sized psu too.

Can anyone help please? I'd really appreciate it. I know I could just google it, but always prefer real world advice/experience.

Cheers,

Johnny

I have two MAME cabs running similar specs to you (mine are i3) and don't have any noise problem, but mine are decased and mounted on a board.

Mine also use Pico mini ATX PSUs, powered by a separate 12v screw terminal PSU. Both are fanless so completely silent. I couldn't tap into the +12v on the JAMMA switcher as it hasn't enough amperage to power the PC.

Thanks both, appreciated.

I hadn't considered Pico psu but seems thats an option. From measuring the whole pc at the wall a pico may be just what i'm after. The tool i've got is one of those power measuring bricks for 3 pin plugs, plug it into the wall, then your 3 pin device in to that. Here's the readings of the pc:

* 0.4a 1.0 cos0

* 94 watts

* 0.04 kwh

I've had a tiny pico psu in the past but will read up to see which one would be best for these requirements. Thanks for the suggestion!

Is there any brands of 3rd party heatsinks and coolers that you would recommend over others?

Cheers,

Johnny

Have you tried updating the bios? I had a noisy pc that went almost silent when I updated, they must have changed the code controlling the fan!

Oooh, hadn't considered that, thanks Chunksin, I'll give that a go. Nice one!

In the next few weeks I'll be ordering some new thermal compound, heat-sink and fan, and hopefully a pico psu + suitable psu for it. Really looking forward to it now.

Many thanks all who've given help and advice.

Cheers,

Johnny
