Wasn't sure where to post this. I found this link from a conversation on Twitter.
It looks like HORI are thinking about making a modular, retro controller with spinner, trackball and a positional(?) joystick.
The trackball doesn't look like it would be much use but the other control types look like they would be great for a project/hacking.

I think they were trying to see if there was any interest in such a controller.
