Silly question but I'd thought I'd ask anyway, is there a limit to how long you can make these ? Thinking of knocking up a 1.5 or 2 metre loom and assume that the it's only the power wires that would need to be thicker. Is my logic sound lol ?
You should use thicker wires for the power and ground connections anyway, the only issue you might have is you have to crank the 5v as it drops the longer the loom. It doesn't matter so much with -5v and 12v.
Also definitely worth giving all the 5V and GND pins their own thick wire, rather than using a couple of cables and taking them to multiple pins. I see many eBay harnesses are too cheap to bother doing this.
The longer the cable the more resistance there is and the need for better quality cables. Some cheap wires out of China, etc, are of a copper alloy, which has a higher resistance to pure copper wire. You can also get OFC, or Oxygen Free Copper. These are more for higher end equipment that require improved signal integrity by reducing crystal boundaries and contaminants. Probably overkill for 70s - 00s arcade equipment though.
