A few weeks ago I was reading on Wikipedia how Mr Do's Castle was originally supposed to be 'Knights vs Unicorns' and not be a Mr Do game at all. Allegedly there were originally different character graphics but I haven't been able to find any real evidence of this. However much of the games graphics would fit in with the knight theme (castle, shield etc).

Anyway I thought it might be a nice idea to do a graphics hack of the Mr Do vs Unicorns variant to change the Mr Do character to a knight.

Going to have a go at this with Turaco as it looks like it will do the job. Anyone here use this?

Never used Turaco, wrote a custom convertor for my pacman sprites and tiles so i could use fireworks to create them. This program would of been my next choice tho'

Had a bit of a play around with this last night. Turaco seems to work pretty well.

The limiting factor is that I only seem to be able to use blue, red, white, black and brown from the palette. Other colours come out transparent as far as I can tell.

Don't suppose I can change the palette colours without altering the game code so it might be tricky to get a decent looking knight out of the available colours...

It depends how often they had to set the the sprite pallete for that sprite. It may be that it only gets set at level start.

Don't have any first hand knowledge on that hardware, but looking through the mame source may point you to the palette addresses for the sprites.
