So, I have a very high spec HP Mobile Workstation that I use for work. i7 Sandy Bridge but it still manages to run like a dog. I realise some of this is down to the encrypted HDD (SATA at that) but also I just discovered that it's only got a single stick of memory in it (4GB)

I want to make it dual channel and 8GB. Can I buy a single 4GB stick that has the same spec as the other stick (PC3-12800-11-11) but is a different make or do I really need to replace both so they are an exact matching pair right down to make and model?

Problem is, it's a work laptop - I don't mind spending £20 for a single stick but £40 or more for a pair is getting too much when the thing isn't even mine. And no, I can't ask them for it, or expense it, that will take months!

Dont quote me, but I think a different make should be ok.

but I would recommend a matched pair if thats an option.

It might be. There's another guy with the same laptop. I'll see what he says. He might have the same module installed. If he has we can sort something out. Only problem is he's moving out of the country and then if there is a problem and I need my stick back before sending my machine to IT to fix...
