John,
If the Robotron still has side art then it is one step up from Dave's (which had
been painted over) and mine, which is a Joust. Mine was horrifically Jamma'd to
the point where I would fear for any player's safety. It obviously had no
boardset (thanks Dave), has a pretty knackered ex-Pole Position monitor and a
drilled and battered CP which needs replacing. I'm still fantastically happy
that I have it and have been able to restore it to a playable state. When Rav's
repro panels, marquees and monitor glasses are available it will look
magnificent. There is no reason why your friend's Robotron couldn't be just as
well restored as Dave's or mine... and with good sideart too.
The reason nobody commented on the Gravitar is that it went to XY-Man who did the
decent thing and put Black Widow in it... in keeping with BW being a Gravitar
conversion for the most part. If that was off being MAME'd then I'd have spoken
up. I'd have everything bar a spare monitor and sideart to convert that to Space
Duel.
I suppose it's not, strictly speaking, a hanging offence to MAME a classic... but
when that classic is so desirable and (relatively) easily restorable it is quite
saddening. If I were still looking for a Roby of my own then I'd be pretty
pissed off reading that someone else had given up on restoring it and converted
it to something else.
Admittedly, my conversion of a Joust to a Robotron could upset a devout Joust fan
too, so I'd better shut up now before I shoot myself in the other foot. ;-)
BTW, of all the Robotrons I know of, not one of them languishes in a garage or
storage. It's a game that gets played a lot by its owners, which is why people
go to the effort of restoring them.
Cheers
Ian
