Out of nowhere really I have suddenly become really appreciative of the amazing feat of the NASA Apollo program and the moon landing of 1969.

I guess last year's BBC podcast started me off (and it is great):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p083t547

After hearing that I understood more and then found this excellently made Youtube compilation of video and audio for the Apollo 11 lunar landing descent:

What an amazing achievement that was!!

Our UKVAC thing is very similar - a love of legacy technological excellence!

I'll just wait here for the conspiracy theorists to show up...

Well my opinion is that we did go to the moon. Just not in 1969 . USA wanted to beat the Russians so they made it up. And few years later they did go when they had the things all sorted. Camera s are getting better and better , telescopes etc so landing sites and stuff you can see now

But nobody could in 1969

But that’s my thinking

No. They definitely got there in 1969 and it was an amazing achievement. I think the conspiracy theories only really came about because the achievement was so amazing that some thought it couldn't be true.

It wasn't cheap though - the U.S. spent $150+ billion and at the peak they had 400,000 people working on it! There's a wealth of information about the program available online.

There's a ton of good books out there about the Apollo missions that are worth checking out.

The video that proves it for me is this. Armstrong talks through the actual footage from the Lunar Module as it descended to the surface, and running alongside that is images from Google maps. Suffice to say, they are identical.

the conspiracies are interesting in them selves, which ever one you father. Other then the Titanic conspiracy I think it's one of the oldest. Check out Mike bara's stuff. He did a series last year on the landings. Plenty of coast to coast podcasts on it.

The Lego sets pritty neat :)

I was lucky enough to go to Florida last year and visited the Kennedy Space Center - well worth a visit if you are interested in this stuff

As you say amazing what can be achieved, you do get the feeling new generations are losing interest but lots of new stuff going on their now like SpaceX, hence all the moving white dots in the sky now...

Yeah that's pretty special!

I've visited Kennedy Space Centre too.. it's worth every effort to get there. Just standing under the Apollo rocket section assemblies and seeing the scale.. you'll never see anything else like it unless you work in the oil industry!

For scale:

Going to the Kennedy Space Center is one of the highlights of my life. As above seeing the true scale of that stuff for yourself is mind-blowing.

Yeah, anyone in any doubt about the scale of it all just needs to walk through that door and see that view of the Apollo rocket, you just stand for a few seconds saying "WOW, look at the size of that!!!"

The other great addition since my previous visit 20+ years ago was the space shuttle

I love places that you can see real deal not replicas of stuff
