I'm looking at Cometlake (Probably a 10700 CPU) build.

Last time I built a gaming machine it was an X99 system and I had problems finding a compatible M2 SSD.

I want a MB that is compatible with a fast NVME drive (5gbs read)

Anyone built one recently?

Has anyone got any recommendations?

I am likely out of date here, but when I built my gaming pc recently, only the new AMD chipsets were compatible with the pci4.0 nvme's. I moved over to an AMD build and got a Sabrent Rocket.

Thanks Tronads

I was just reading literally a few second before your post that Cometlake doesn't have PCIe 4.0

So I may be taking the AMD route instead which I haven't done since the K62.

I really haven't a clue when it comes to Modern AMD stuff any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah, you need Ryzen atm for PCIe4, the AMD cpus are sh*t hot atm, not like the crappy Bulldozer era.
Some Intel mobos claim PCIe4, but it's not possible till Intel change some stuff.

Ryzen will give you the best bang for buck build by far, and the stock coolers they come with are great too, unlike Intel again :D

Ryzen is more tied to memory speed though, so make sure you get the right stuff, Intel lags on that too though.

I went for the following :
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X cpu

ASUS TUF Gaming X570 Plus motherboard

16Gb Corsair Vengence DDR4-3600 ram

The PC is absolutely rapid, the only regret I have is getting an AMD based graphics card...I wish I had gone for Nvidia on that front.

How do Ryzen CPU models / generations work is it similar o Intel's with the core series and the 1st letter denoting the generation etc?

I take it 9 the latest is 8 still a good option?

I want to keep the the whole build to about £800 or under (MB, CPU, RAM, Cooler and a 1TB Sabrent) but don't want to fall into the trap of buying something a few generations old.

Ryzen 3, 5,7 and 9 relate to the number of cores.
The 3's are Quad Core, the 9's are 12 core.

Ideally on the budget you want to stick to, you want to be looking for a 7, the 9's being much more expensive. The numbers after the core basically link to the cou power, so a 3700 will be faster than a 3600. An X on the end is a bit more of a power improvement over a non X of the same number.

I think the 3600X was the sweet spot on power/price ratio.

Great thanks,

Usually I'd do a ton of research but want to order today if possible.

first number the revision of the hardware, the rest the model branding. Sounds like you want the 3700 or 3800 'X' versions (a little higher clocked), and pair that with at least some 3600mhz memory.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for, having trouble finding compatible parts that are available for Saturday delivery without paying over the odds. Thought Amazon would be a sure thing but nothing available until Monday. Would rather buy all from the same seller so if something doesn't work I can send the lot back.
The Main concern is the PCIe 4 NVMe compatibility, I've been looking at the QVLs from the manufacturers sites but if anyone else knows of any compatibility lists or has first hand experience with one of these drives please let me know.

After doing a bit of research I basically came to the conclusion that your (Tronads) system is the ideal build. I only upgraded to the Ryzen 9 as it wasn't much more than the 7.

I've ordered:

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus

16Gb corsair vengeance DDR4-3600

Sabrent Rocket 1TB Nvme SSD PCIe 4.0

Thanks all for your help!

Hopefully it'll all be here for the weekend.

This should speed up my web browsing and YouTube watching a treat

Sorry, I missed your question on the Sabrent Rocket model, but I think you have the same one. I don't think there is more than one PCI4.0 1Tb version.

Yeah I think your right, I noticed the other version they have is only PCIe 3 so I got the copper coloured one, really cheap at the moment (£160) was tempted to go for the 2Tb but can't really justify it at the moment... but t's got two slots!!

Quick question, are you using the m2 socket with the heatsink or the one without?
