[ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
Hi guys,

Are you drowning in a sea of Spam like me?
I was wondering if anyone can recommend some REALLY GOOD Anti-Spam software?

SO far I've tried Spam Assassin (SA), Eudora v6 and Norton Anti-Spam (NAS)
all with mixed results.

SA was great when I first got it but is no longer supported so the rules
are too old to be useful.
Eudora deletes to many proper mails.
NAS only tagged 76 of 168 Spam messages in a sample of typical Email.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Re: [ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
No spam software is going to be 100%, either they will let some spam though
or delete some non-spam messages.

I just setup a handful of outlook 'If message contains word VIAGRA then move
to DELETED ITEMS' type rules and that gets rid of most

Try a Bayseian spam filter - Thunderbird (Mozilla mail) has one built
in - or I think you can
get them to work with Outlook etc. I use Mail on the mac which has it
built in too.

Once it's learnt the sort of spam you get it should be pretty
successful at flagging it.

Have a google for bayesian + spam for more info...

Re: [ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
My mail program suggest what emails are spam which you can override by
telling what is and what is not spam, over the course of a moth it
learned what I consider spam and now chuck's it all in a spam bin.

I check the spam bin every now and then and have only found one email
that was not spam. My inbox gets less than 1 or 2 spams a day now while
the spam bin receives dozens.

Only problem is my mail app only works on osx...

http://sourceforge.net/projects/popfile/

It's a bayesian filter that's open source. It sits between your POP3 mail
client (I use Outlook 2000) and your server. It also works OK with Norton
AntiVirus 2003 in there as well, which I also use.

I've been using it for about 3 months and it has given me a success rate
about 99.5%. The way I have set it up is to add the word '[spam]' to the
start of any suspect emails and then an Outlook rule hoovers them all into
a separate folder.

I couldn't live without it.

"Mailwasher" is a very good spamfilter and uses the Bayesian method.
I have been using it for nearly a year now, and its a nice way of catching
spam before it pollutes your mail program. It takes a while for it to learn
the spam traits, so don't expect immediate results, give it a few weeks.
It has really good configurable filters for friends and blacklisted mail, just
be very careful how you use the "Spamcop" databases as they are ruthless
and you can lose a lot of legitimate mail if you are over-zealous with them!

Re: [ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
To actually address your question, i use something called "I Hate Spam"
on my work laptop. Will probably just provide you with more mixed
results, but it allows for learning and bouncing and all the usual
features.

It integrates into Outlook, Outlook express, incredimail (whatever that
is!), eudora and hotmail, so no use if you're not Windows based.

I've found the built in spam filter in Mozilla thunderbird to be
excellent. Thunderbird is also a great email client, nothing like
Mozilla itself, which I'm not a big fan of. It's open source as well so
free to download from http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/. Bonus.

Re: [ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
Used to be drowning in spam, even used mailwasher, but if anything
seemed to make it worse!!!

Ended up being told about K9 ( http://keir.net/k9.html ), it's free, needs a
bit of setting up, but it has been amazing!!

It takes a while for it to get up and running, but usually it has a accuracy
rate of about 80% after about 10 days, currently my accuracy rate is
99.2%.

Well worth a look and it's free (that also helps!) :)

RE: [ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
SpamBayes works fantastically well for me... integrates as a plugin for
Outlook, and works pretty transparently.

You "train" it, and it learns over time what's spam, and what's not...
so you never need to subscribe to any services which keep your filter
updated.

Well recommended.

Re: [ukvac] OT: Anti-Spam Software
All my spam is sent to i_c_q@asteroids.fsnet.co.uk (wonder where they
harvested that from!)

Does anyone know of a program that will delete and bounce all mails to that
address directly on the mail server?

Mailwasher can be configured to bounce emails and delete from the server,
automatically if necessary. Like I said before, its pretty good in my
experience.
