[ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
Sorry for the OT post but...

Can anyone help with this?

For reasons which I won't go into, 2 years ago we signed up for broadband
with wanadoo (freeserve at the time).

Now I want to migrate to plus.net and I need my MAC code which I've asked
for.

They said;

a) They CANNOT give it to me over the phone.

b) It does not appear on their screen.

c) It can only be emailed, since it is generated by a computer somewhere
else.

d) It takes up to 24 hours to come through.

Well I've waited the 24 hours and guess what? No MAC code.

Before I ring them again, can anyone tell me if this is true and does anyone
have an experience of migrating from wanadoo?

It seems fairly clear that it is not in their best interest to surrender the
MAC code.

Regards,

Paul

A MAC address is a physical hardware address for a network interface.
It's entirely seperate to any IP address.

Not entirely sure why they would need that though?!

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
From what I gather every ADSL line is assigned a MAC code by BT.

This is the number that used to facilitate migration without it, you cannot
migrate.

No fixed IP with wanadoo, it's not supported.

plus.net need my MAC code which is currently held by wanadoo.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
That's true, you do need the MAC code, however it's not in the same
format you would expect for a MAC address, typically an alphanumeric
code.

When I migrated from Plus net, they also wouldn't tell me over the
phone, apparently they had to request it, they sent it to me via their
'Contact Us' system, I think it only took a couple of days.

I would give them another day or so and then chase them up.

Best Regards
Chris

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
I just rang them again now.

They can't understand why it hasn't gone through, although the email address
they were using was an old freeserve dial up account which was cancelled
months ago which kind of explains why I haven't had it.

So I guess it's another 48 hours wait for me.

RE: [ukvac] Re: OT: Broadband Migration
I think he's talking about a "Migration Authorisation Code", not a MAC
address (ethernet card unique id).

The provider should be able to give you this easily enough within 5 working
days.

Why do they need all this info?
Can't you just cancel with Wandadoo and open a new account with plus as if
it was your first broadband account and not bother with all this migration
business.

Re: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
You could, but you'd have to be prepared to be without broadband for some
time (maybe weeks) while BT re-tests your line etc.

Migrations should take less than 3-5 days, so it's by far the preferable
option.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
Oh, I see.
So it's not a simple case of Ticking a box "close account" on a Wanadoo PC
and ticking a box "open account" on a "plus PC".
We still have to use the old fasion method of unscrewing some wires from one
terminal and re-attaching them to another terminal.
Good ol' BT crawling its way into the 21st century. ;-)

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
Yes I could... but it would mean;

Cancelling with wanadoo (30 days notice). Wanadoo then have to release the
line. I then have to appy to plus.net as a new customer (I get charged an
activation fee for this). All this will take at least 2 weeks to get up and
running during which time I am without ADSL.

If I migrate it's free and I should only have downtime between wanadoo
closing it's service and the time it takes me to enter my plus.net user name
and password.

The only other way is to have a second line put in, cancel with wanadoo and
have plus.net on the new line. New line installation is £110 with BT plus
line rental during the change over period.

Still no MAC key from wanadoo by the way.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
Further to my last email regarding adsl migration and I do think this is
important for those of us who do wish to change ADSL providers...

My third call to Wanadoo did actually yield a result.

They were 'suddenly' able to give me my MAC code over the phone after I
asked to speak to a manager.

Only time will tell, if the migration goes smoothly.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Broadband Migration
I know it's a bit late for you now, Paul, as you've got a result but for the benefit of others in the same boat...

I was reading about this in PC pro magazine recently and lots of ISP's are reluctant to give out MAC codes because they want to keep your business, although the Ofcom code of practice states that they must give it out within 5 days, as long as you are free to leave your contract of course.

The article said 'Hold firm, mention the Ofcom code of practice and keep chasing. Be persistent and, if need be, threaten to complain to Ofcom or Ortelo (the Office of Telecommunications ombudsman).'

Andy.
