[ukvac] OT: Email scam?
Umm, i've just started getting a lot of mails coming back as
undeliverable to me. When i look at the headers it looks decidedly
like someone is using my address in the From field to send out porn
emails. They come up with someones name and then my email address in
brackets afterwards.

I DID NOT SEND THESE MAILS :O)

Now i'm not thick on the subject, but i'm not as clued up as some on
here about it.

1. Anyone else getting this?
2. Did i ought to be concerned?
3. Any ramifications on me?
4. What should i do about it?

The domain in question is purchased through easyspace.co.uk and as
such, the domain name redirects to guddler.co.uk on port 80 and the
mailbox is hosted by easyspace....

Ummm!

Martin.

Hi Martin,

(I've missed out on the JAMMA cab haven't I?)

Are you using MS Exchange on NT Server to collect your mail?? - If so you
might have an open relay.

Hi Dan,

Jamma cab: Yep, fraid so. I needed to know what was going on before
you went away!

As for the mail problem.

Hmm.

I've no idea what easyspace use for their mailbox.

I use the usual PC running XP Pro and Office XP version of Outlook
to collect my mail.

That's on my desktop PC.

On my work laptop i connect through a VPN to my works Exchange
server and then again use the XP Pro / Office XP setup to get my
mail. On both systems i have Outlook setup to leave a copy of the
messages on the server and delete when i delete from my trash so
that i can view messages from either PC.

So far it's only happening on guddler.com not on my work address or
any of my three other mail addresses.

Just getting a bit nervous about this, that's all.

Martin.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Email scam?
If your address is on a spammer's list somewhere, they sometimes use random
addresses they have as the senders address, to hide where it comes from. Of
the millions they send out, hundreds or thousands get bounced, and guess
where they bounce to?

It's a sad fact that once you're on a spam list you can't do much about it
except change your e-mail address.

I had this a couple of weeks back, I got about 600 'undeliverables' in a
day.

The good news is it stopped without me doing anything, probably because they
moved on to the next spoofed address.

You probably knew most of that, and like Daniel said, you may also have an
open relay. go to spamcop.net or ordb.org and you can check to see if your
server is an open relay.

Andy.

Hm. Windows + Outlook = fear, misery, pain.

Not much of a long shot - not got a trojan of some kind have you?
Better get that machine virus scanned..

Failing that, it's not uncommon now for spammers to use email viruses to
spread their plague of crap, which picks a random address out of the
infected persons addressbook, or with an address they just saw somewhere.

Sadly I hear it's illegal to track these people down and hit their heads
with rocks for ~30 minutes.

Hmm, anything other than Windows + Outlook = no money in the bank at
the end of the month as i am employed to do Windows programming for
a living!

The rest however duely noted :O)

Will do some virus checks. However, if i'm infected then i'll be
going for a refund on my newly updated Norton Anti virus 2004 and my
up to date McAffee antivirus software!

Doesn't look like either of my domains have an open relay.

Guess someone's just chosen to use my address for spam then.

Hope it doesn't get blocked too much and that it passes quickly.

Martin.
