[ukvac] OT: Your experiences appreciated on Domain Hosting

Hello All,

I have a large handful of domain names registered with Easyspace for myself and a few
other small businesses that I deal with.

Mostly I use these for simple email and website forwarding to other accounts.

The Easyspace control panel has become more and more complex and difficult to use over
time and there is no phone number on the site for support.

Does anyone here have any experiences positive or negative about this sort of service
with other providers, as I'm thinking about moving the whole lot?

I have had a look around but there's so many that Google finds that I don't know where
to start!

The main reason I've been with Easyspace so far is that they were cheap and simple, but
now I'm not so sure.

Please be objective! Most people tend to say "Oh yes, my ISP is by far the best, waffle
waffle, waffle" and have no experience of other services. Whilst this is useful, please
consider the bad bits of your service as these are the ones I'm trying to avoid!!

Your thoughts are appreciated.
Tkx,
D-Type.

RE: [ukvac] OT: Your experiences appreciated on Domain Hosting

Hi,

I'm currently hosted with PowWeb (www.powweb.com) and they seem quite
reasonable to me. Haven't had a problem since I've been with them. I'd avoid
ValueHost, though. In all my experiences they've been unreliable and the
support was poor.

Hope this is handy. There are probably hundreds more cheap and reliable
hosts, which is why I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread... ;)

Regards,
Brian

Re: [ukvac] OT: Your experiences appreciated on Domain Hosting

hi,

I've used

easyspace, netcettera, freenetname, demon, nicnames and just-the-name

up till now.

the best i've found so far (considering, domain panel ease of use, minimal
problems, responses to personal contact, domain transfers, and being
proffessional and reasonable during domain name disputes) is -
www.just-the-name.co.uk

they are not the cheapest by far

domain registration - £9.99 per .uk domain name (2 year reg) $30 ish per .com
URL masking - £14 ish per annum (but is real URL masking, not frame based
like easyspace - full domain masking logs included)

pro's : very simple control panel (but powerful, can designate changed DNS
server for example if you run your own). prefix sub domain redirection very
straight forward (e.g replacing the www with anything you want)

con's: possible restriction to 10 unique email address redirections per
name through the control panel. (there is only space for 10 in the list,
but have never reached it on any one domain to know if it stops there or
allows you more.
twice (in 3 years) experienced email redirect failures (they wheren't
forwarding email on, or returning it - it ended up in a black hole - first
time 6 hours, second time 3 days - not since 2003 though)

worth a read of their website anyway.

I have had many many many different hosting sollutions and found the
support always the biggest problem. It's a pain when things go wrong
and you can't speak to a human being.

At the moment I am with UKHOST4U.COM and they are very decent for
their prices. You can contact support via a phone line, chat or email.

Their control panel is very up to date and a kid can use them, very
simple. Their servers run Linux but they have windows if you must.
