[ukvac] Pole Position tech (?) question
Hi All,

Although I attended Tech. college in my youth.....did electrical
engineering...blah....blah.....I need sum advice....

I'm putting back together my Pole Position sit down cabinet, after a major
clean out-fix up, and am wanting to replace the four speakers that are in
it. The schematics show that two of these speakers are 4 ohm / 15 watt -
shielded ( the other two - unshielded?). Can anyone point me to where I can
get any of these speakers; or answer the following questions...

Are car speakers shielded ? - my local car parts shop doesn't have a clue.
Could I use four(qty) 8 ohm speakers instead ? - what would the difference
in impedance cause ?

Any advice please.

Thanks.
Mike

RE: [ukvac] Pole Position tech (?) question
Ah right,
Car speakers are generally not sheilded although they are 4ohm
They have to be sheilded to stop the magnets effecting the Monitor (funny
colours).
I guess that the two that are not sheilded are at the back of the cabinet
away from the monitor.
You can tell if a speaker is sheilded as the magnet (big round black thing
on back of speaker)
is totally enclosed in a large metal housing making the speaker stick out at
the back.
If there are no tears in the speakers and they sound OK I wouldn't bother
replacing them.
Using higher impedence speakers won't do any damage but they may sound
quieter but they still
have to be sheilded if they are near the monitor.

Cheers

Yep.. the two under the Control Panel are Sheilded, and the
ones at the back (behind the seats aren't), a good place to
look would be Maplins and / or Brent Leisure.. Both have a
nice selection of speakers. Car speakers, on the whole will
be unsheilded, get something that matches the original
though.. Can't have those nearly 20 year old boards
damaged :)
