I have only used Macs for the last 20 years so it is a shock to see just how much stuff I will never need is installed when see a windows 10 pc.

Is there anyway of easily removing all the bloat without affecting performance of emulators/hardware etc?

You can look for one of the stripped down 'tiny' versions on google but not legit. Not sure about doing it yourself though.

If you're removing the bloat from the original installation media then the process is called Slipstreaming. There is a tool called nLite that can do this. The version for Windows XP is free but for 7 and above needs payment.

Alternatively you can just uninstall programs and features that you don't need (most of the inbuilt Windows stuff is a "feature" and the removal process is slightly different), however you won't be able to get rid of as much as you can with a Slipstreamed image. It is possible to create an image that won't boot by slipstreaming so you need to be careful.

If you want to go really slim though, I'd suggest considering a Linux MAME build instead.

It is also worth getting something like ShutUp10 to disable all of the BS background telemetry that is being sent back to Microsoft.
