Posted in the software updates and think it should have been here really - sorry for duplication.

Ok so after 12 months off I have started to look again at the Repair Software. I had already added lots of features not released that included :-

1) Fully up to date Rom Ident (Current Mame Version .230)

2) Auto play game if Rom name and game exists

3) PCB Identification - Rom/Search ect ect ect.

4) Auto rom add to main screen - So you can see what roms are needed at a glance

5) Rom tools for splitting , joining ect ect

There is loads more i have added as well but to much to list it all.

ADDITIONS LOOKING AT NOW :-

1) A lot of people have asked or mentioned that an online repair database ,that could be shared, would be beneficial and I always agreed but there is costs and a lot of work involved. I have already switched the databases over so they can be accessed remotely and worked out exactly how it will all work. This is now possible and actually working on my test system.

2) Shared database of parts and information for roms / rams ect. As people add items it will be added for everyone (Would be managed by me so we didnt have duplicates ect)

3) Rom ident database online so everyone has the most up to date information.

MY DILEMA'S :-

1) At this point its going to start and cost me money and I basically dont have it !!! I would need to either rent a server online or purchase a server and manage it from my location (My preferred , and after looking i would do this - I have already purchased a server at a Cost of £250 for testing purposes).

2) Is it worth my time and effort ?? Currently there are very few users, I can keep new version working for me but to get it released will be hours and hours of work (If there is enough users I have no issues doing it)

3) I want to keep this free but unsure if I can given costs - So would people pay monthly for this ?? I am not after making money but just help with the costs of servers / Internet / Static IPS ect ect ect.

THOUGHTS:-

Depending on how many people wanted the software I could do 2 different versions. One version would work normally but with reduced functions and features (IE no online rom ident , Cant access other repair logs ect) This way i could have a pay and free version , Although regardless of how many people use the software I would still need to do the servers. It will be the same amount to me if 1 person using it or 1000 people using it I suppose.

I have been using this for a few years now and I wont go back to anything else - Basically its saved a lot of time. Being ill I never touched a board in 6 months and after opening the doors and reading my notes I was back up and running in minutes. ALl of the information i want is stored and the Rom ident is just fantastic and works like a dream. There are lots of new things i have added to make it easier and will continue to do so. This project is far from dead.

Thanks for your time,

Dave.

Hiya Dave,

Did PM you a message a few weeks ago, however didnt get a reply - Just wondered how i might get involved in this please? Dont need any online functionality (would probably be a bonus, though I fancied just having a play first!) :D

Cheers

Paul

Hi Dave,

This is a wee bit similar to what I've been working on, though it's a bit more restrictive as it's being programmed for an iPad, but at the same time more interactive.

I'm currently working through a few user interface elements via Photoshop and doing screen layouts. I'm hoping to put something online in the coming week or so for feedback.

One suggestion I had put up was holding Roms, so people could check or re-burn a known stable version. About 3 weeks ago I got an email from Atari, about using or holding unlicensed Roms, with a return email to speak to their team. Not sure if it's their legal team or not, but since I've not published anything yet I'm not fussed. If I do do this it would be for the long haul.

Was wondering if maybe we could find a way to use each others services, if/when this ever gets released.

Hi Phil , An ipad version !! I dont do Apple sadly. My software has no ability to store or manage roms as this would breach licencing. I have had no contact from any manufactures but have made as sure as I can that I dont breach anything (Well hopefully !). The roms page is just information.

You need anything then you are welcome to message me :)

Dave.

P.S I was going to have an image of the manufacturer show on the main page when the games was selected but again decided against this as that also breached copyright ! you got to be very carefull. What amazes me is if they are contacting you over copyright then why are they not contacting all of the Barcades that are using All in one cards ?

That's what surprises me, and frustrates me so much at the same time. There are so many places with images, roms, multi-cades, etc, and they just seem to get bigger and bigger, and freely advertised on the web, online stores. Do a simple search in Google.

I am looking to show company logos, screenshots, board layouts, etc., with a simple "Images shown are copyrighted of their respective owners.", or similar, and see how it goes. Might approach a few companies to see what happens, but if they refuse, then they would have to go.

Yeh i wrote another rom ident that allowed you to search and see images of the boards / games ect. I decided not to release for that reason. I am no good at copyright laws and all that so i prefer to stay away. Does just amaze you how others get away with it and then we show a few images and booom they contact us to say we are breaching there copyright. I would email Atari , They are one of the big boys trying to frighten everyone. They have shut a lot of sites down that supplied roms, Not interested in the ones making money from it though !
