Some of the original Taito/Midway SI style boards have a Fujitsu MB14241 shifter chip to help move the graphics around, these days a lot of them have rotting legs or are faulty. Replacements are fairly difficult to find so whilst I know there are reproductions boards using a number of TTL chips I decided to make my own more compact (only a bit bigger than the original chip) repro using a CPLD.
The code fits nicely into an ATF1502AS and following a bit of testing seems to be working nicely. Photos show the Space Invader test ROM indicating all is good with the shifter, the replacement CPLD board installed on a Taito 2-layer colour SI board, and Lunar Rescue (which gives the shifter a good workout) playing without issue.
