Hi Sokurah

I recognise your name from the WOS forums where I've seen many many helpful and informative posts from you! Welcome to UKVAC.

I hope you'll stay around and contribute to (hopefully) growing arcade homebrew scene. I can send you a pretty extensive document that I wrote on coding for L System hardware if you want and also the C source to a BMP to sprite/tile conversion tool that I wrote. I'll try and find some time to tidy up the skeleton framework for the tech demo this weekend so that I can also pass that on to you.

Maybe you could do a port of Dingo or Speccies/Speccies 2 to L System, that would be no problem at all for such a master of Z80 as yourself.

Great to have you around here.

Thanks, I'm glad I found this place.

That would be awesome, thanks. Although I have many projects on the go (currently I'm dividing my time between a Spectrum game and a Doctor Who game for Windows/Mac) I probably won't be able to resist tinkering with the arcade dream...if I just get over that initial "how-to" hurdle.
smiley36.gif

It wouldn't make sense to port Dingo as that started out as an arcade game to begin with, but Speccies 2 would be a simple little beginner-project. I might just try that. Well, let's see what happens.

Wow, I just checked out your website and what an impressive list of vector re-makes in there. I will be sure to check them out.

I have a L-System PCB in my hoard, free to you if you need it for development.

Thanks, I love vector games. I'd actually love to make some homebrew for my Vectrex too...but I think I have more options with a nice Z80 system so that's what it's gonna be.

And that is a great offer - thanks. I'd be a right dingo to turn that down.

...guess I'd have to deliver something then.

A good opportunity to also build that supergun I've needed for years. "All" of my boards (5-6) are just sitting in a box on top of a closet and getting no use. I have a cabinet too but I have no room for it anymore so that's sitting in the attic. But a supergun - that is something I can find room for.

Welcome Sokurah!
I think this section is one of the most exiting topics on the forum apart from the raids!

I looked at your website and it looks very impressive! I'm going to try some of them out.

You can run modified rom sets in MAME, that's how I did all the dev work for this demo.

Just came across this thread, and I downloaded your demo and hooked it up in my HomeBrew version of MAME (It's called HBMAME - google it). Although you think it's crap I was highly impressed, and it will be in HBMAME's next release in June.

Looking forward to whatever else you come up with. :)

Excellent. This saves me from having to go through all the trouble to compile it myself. Great service. Thanks.

Hi Robert

May I say that it's an honour to have such a highly regarded mamedev as yourself commenting on my meagre coding effort. Keep up the awesome work you do on HBMAME (I've been using it for a long time now!) and thanks for the kind words.

Will your version be able to run ANY homebrew ROM called Plotting or will it only support this specific demo?

I recompiled Mame tonight (...again - I haven't done it for like 10 years) and I was able to remove all the nag screens but not that damn "files missing" box (when it's clearly only the size or checksum that's the error). Apart from that the whole recompiling process is a lot easier these days though.

But as I'm hoping to code for the Puzznic board soon I'd like it to accept that ROM too - no matter what errors threre are. Hell, I can't even make it accept the demo from this thread.

...I could use a bit of help getting on with this.

MAME will attempt to run pretty much anything you through at it, even MP3's and text files if you so wish! It'll moan that the CRCs and rom sizes are incorrect but it'll still attempt to load the files that you feed it into the appropriate CPU address space. Are you attempting to run the demo from a zip archive or from the files extracted from the zip archive into a folder? As only the latter will succeed.

Neither way works for me. Should I try with an older version of Mame or does it require a system ROM like the NeoGeo system?

Are you running mame from the command line? If you do it will moan the crc's are wrong but will load and attempt to run anyway.

If you use the GUI to launch a game it will not allow incorrect checksums, you have to specify the romset at the command line.

Aha, that was it. Didn't think of that. It works now. Thanks.

Sorry, was away on a holiday.

It is coded for this particular version, but like the others said, you can try anything and just ignore the warnings.
