Hi gents,

After lurking in my basement for nearly 6 years, and a visit to a gaming museum today with the kids - I finally dug out the Xbox original I received from someone on here.

First pleasant surprise - it works! Well it powers up and gives me a menu etc.

It doesn't have any games on the hard disk, and I only have 1 game - Steel Battalion - which I'm keeping hidden from the kids for a couple of days.

What are some good games to play on the Xbox, especially for kids aged 7-12 (but already play Fortnite etc on Switch and PS4 - so shooting things isn't so much of an issue).

Yes, I am that old that I never had a telly pluggable console...well, except the Binatone from the late 70s...

i’m afraid if they already play switch & ps4 they may just laugh at the xbox.

as it’s a 3d microsoft cd based console like ps4 but just under performing an all counts...

games i/ we liked to play street fighter 3 3rd strike

desert storm 4 player split screen

halo

The kids thankfully seem to have zero gaming snobbery- they like to play anything from Soccer on my Atari Tournament Table, Minestorm on my Vectrex, various original Wii games through various modern re-release of NES, Game and Watch etc - and of course my cabs ;)

Sure - they regularly hit their screen time limit on PS4 and Switch when they get given the chance, but they love discovering older platforms.

I’m coming from the opposite direction- I am/was a VAC lad, then missed the console era completely! I’m finally getting round to seeing what I missed :)

Swap the Hard drive out: Try and find a small USB key and soft mod it !

My kids love my xbox coin ops. We leave it at the caravan and play mainly 3/4 player games. SO stuff like gauntlet and TMNT etc.

Go on its half term find an old drive !

Outrun 2
Panzer dragoon orta
Jet set radio
Metal wolf chaos (ntsc)

There are tons of great xbox games and most of the multi gen games from that gen(ps2,gamscube,) are better on the xbox.

If any of your younger kids are girls, then (don't laugh), they will love Barbie Horse Adventures.
My 2 girls loved this game and spent many hours on it, as did their grandmother helping them.

Dammit!!!

I bought Halo, Halo2 and Mortal Combat - went to try it out, now the bliddy console won’t start.

If I hold down the power button, I can hear the disk spinning up - but nowt on screen.

Annoying!!

I guess I’m good to start pulling it apart now...

Well, based on visual inspection and a quick cross check on Google/YT - seems I’m good to order a bunch of 3300uF caps.

I had been so looking forward to doing some retro console stuff with the kids this week!

I’ve never been into consoles - I’m relatively new to Vectrex and only got a Wii BITD cos it was a fun thing for parties.

I have kinda fallen for the idea of working my way through brands/generations of consoles now....especially since popular but unloved stuff like early Xbox and PlayStations are practically being given away.

...wife doesn’t know, but I’m off tomorrow to get an Xbox 360 (later slim model) with Kinect and 17 games, 2 wireless controllers, 250gb disk and boxes for 65 euro...I picked up 24 games on an auction for 40 euro...worst case, I spend a few weekend realising I didn’t get into consoles cos I’m too old and set in my VAC ways, and the kids find “retro” consoles dull. I’ll sell the lot for what I paid for them.

I’ll also probably pick up another OG Xbox, purely to get controllers- it appears to be cheaper to get controllers that way, than buying on their own...

I might start a little blog/vlog “old VaC phart gets into these new fangled consoles” or summit ;)

For spares and controllers I would recommend checking these guys out:
https://www.zedlabz.com/

I brought 4x xbox controllers from them and they feel pretty good for 3rd party ones.

I also brought a CD laser assembly and drive belts from them to fix a friends broken xbox.
They are inexpensive and their support is very good :)
