Ok, anyone got any experience with this?

I'm going to just try this anyway in the meantime BUT.

Our dev box is running on Ubuntu 7.1 (yes, really!). But it happens to be the most powerful server we have so I want to install Xen (done) and migrate it's functions into 2 DomU's. One is a demo site (Apache / JBoss / Custom Application), the other is all the Dev stuff (SVN / Hg / Jira / Bamboo etc.).

Obviously I want to run the latest Ubuntu (10.10) in the DomU's but the guide I'm following reckons that Xen on Gutsy (7.1) only supports guests running up to and including gutsy.

So, is that a technical thing, or is it a limitation of Xen-Tools ?

I can, for instance download a pre-rolled VM of 10.10 server, thus bypassing the xen-tools. Is that likely to work on my 7.1 machine.

Hopefully I've not confused everyone

In my (somewhat limited) experience with Xen I had huge trouble with stuff that was that far apart on kernel versions. It really liked working best where the guests were the same as the host.

Hmm,

though, pretty much the expected answer!

I bit the bullet and subscribe to a site where I could download a pre-built VM of 10.10 so I'll give it a go a bit later. Ultimately, I want to update the host to 10.10 but it'a bit of a chicken and egg situation here really. I need the guests set up first, even if not actually running since I'll probably have to do a complete re-install of the host as, like you say, 7.1 -> 10.10 is a major jump.

Hmm, well, as you quite correctly predicted, the idea of using a pre-installed image that was years ahead of the Dom0 failed miserably. But actually due to deficiencies in the version of pygrub installed with 7.1 rather than anything else.

So, after a false start or two (7.1 not being in the mainline mirrors any more) I'm actually doing the unthinkable and seeing how possible it is to go from 7.1 to 10.10 via upgrades by trying it in a VM first!

I could be some time!
