I have been looking at a wonder boy in monsterland (Galaxy bootleg I think) that is running fine except a complete lack of sprites.
Have checked the sprite roms and they are fine and further investigation has led me to the theory that the sprites are encrypted and the small daughter board that's plugged into the main board is responsible to decoding.Found the info on a klov thread after I searched pal16r4a:

The board looks like this:

The klov thread said something about replacing the board with a jumper board and using an unencrypted version of the sprite roms.
My problem is one of the PAL16R4A on the daughter board has a hole in it so I figure it's busted and that's why the sprites are not being displayed.Since these are like proms that need to be programmed and modern programmers can't handle them does anyone have any experience of replacing either the daughter board or the chip?

The piggyback board on this bootleg is used to replace custom ICs of original. For sure the missing sprites on your board are caused by the fried PAL16R4.Some time ago I had a faulty WonderBoy Monsterland bootleg :

and I was able to dump the PAL16R4  (device was unsecured) on the piggyback board but IIRC it was the little one.I converted the fusemap to GAL16V8 :

here is my daughter board (plus gaping hole-how did I not notice this earlier?)
Do you think it could have the same fusemap or will that depend on the version of the board?

The maps are on mame I think but I'm having problems identifying my board.
In my first post I said it was a galaxy bootleg but on looking at the three program roms (24512s) they are all 65536 bytes where the galaxy boot uses two 65536 bins and one 32768.
My d2 rom image matches the galaxy.ic90 but the other two don't match anything (not even coming up in romident).
The gecas boot has three 65536 bins but they don't match any of the rom images from my board.

I've ordered some 27c512s to mess around with the program roms but till then I could either have some modded bootleg or my program roms are duff. The game sits in demo mode fine (apart from the sprites) so I'm thinking the code is fine.

Also the first link in your post give me a 404.

Sadly there are no PAL dumps (only BPROMs, they are used for colors) in MAME so you can't repair your board unless you find another same bootleg and dump the device hoping it's not secured.
The link I posted is good, I can view contents of archive.
Try this alternate donwload link:

Thanks for that.
Have ordered a GAL16V8 to try with your code.I'm hoping it's the same and it wont harm to try.
