DisplayPort v1.4a or HDMI v2.1?

Just got a wizzy new monitor that supports the latest HDMI and DisplayPort versions, but my aging gfx card only supports v1.4a for DisplayPort.

Haven't set the monitor up yet, but wondering which connection is likely to be best? Not using multi monitor setup, so daisy chaining is irrelevant.

Cheers

DP1.4 will involve compression, I think, at higher quality methods ... ...
HDMI 2.1 will have native capabilities that MIGHT outstrip that ... ... but ... again ... unsure ...
DP2... er ... something ... has all the goodness ...
...
Anyway ... I think that if you're wanting to keep yourself able to use other equipment ... then ... think about staying on HDMI ... because if you end up putting an AVR in that chain to have some cool 7.1 or Atmos/DTS-X like surround ... then ... HDMI will likely be your buddy, there, and you'll have set yourself up in advance.

That's not to say that DP cannot handle that stuff, it is just that almost no equipment other than PCs and a few industrial/commercial products use DP.

...

All that being said ... I'm like @xMasterPx ... DP all the way. ... 😅 ... plus ... it's just a nicer connector, y'know?

Yeah, I'm not trying to purposefully put you on HDMI 2.1 as some kind of 'low standard' ... because ... on balance ... you can probably get more out of it than DP1.4 ... in general.

However, since you mentioned that your GFX card is not upgraded, then DP1.4 will likely be your best bet for a fuller flavour.

Just ... ... when you do upgrade that ... don't prop up the NVidia machine. ;-) ... They hold back technology (LIKE DP2.whatever or HDMI2.1) which literally holds you back when you do something like the exact thing that you have done, here. They only just made ALL their ports 'modern' in the latest generation of cards. This matters when you decide that you want to plug your PC into your lovely, huge, 4K telly, AVR, or projector, to game on. ;-)

Oh, and if you want to get into splitters, using HDMI for sound only, and all that stuff ... ... then ... let's get the whiskey out and discuss how Windows is an utter shit show ... and how to use one or two splitters, and which ones don't fuck your shit up even more! 😅

Just set it up with HDMI for now which will probably be good enough, but haven't tested gaming on it yet. Also, I have no plans for a super setup with AVR etc.

Still need to calibrate the monitor for best image, but despite the high refresh rate, I've noticed the mouse pointer disappears when moved quickly across a light background. Maybe it's my aging eyes, but I've never had this problem before. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the replies.

little tip for you on this, change the cursor to black

Settings > Accessibility > Mouse Pointer and Touch

you can also change the mouse pointer speed in the same bit, but i would 100% recommend changing the cursor to black, i was constantly losing mine before i did that, you can also change the size, have a play and see what suits you best

Yeah, I plan to do this. I'm just a bit confused why I'd need to on such a high refresh (and expensive) monitor. Never had the problem before.

check the pointer speed as well, i also have to set my DPI on my mouse to 3000 as any faster and i cant see it, i set it half that for other things like games where i dont need the pointer moving so quick

cant imagine a new monitor would have affected any of that though
