Hi all

Can some one help me identify Sega cabinet that i'm interested in buying? I've been chatting to the seller who is totally upfront and has been happy to do video calls etc. The condition is good and it's obviously been looked after.

Although advertised as a New Net City, there are a few things that are throwing me off. Firstly it has no 'NNC' branding. It has NC side decals and Naomi Universal controller cover and front sticker.

Secondly the feet look different, they are missing the front casters and have black 'hoofs' which makes me think it might have been chopped from an upright Naomi Uni.

Most importantly is there a way I can identify if it has a Tri-Sync monitor?

The tube serial: Toshiba A68LTF356X

The chassis serial: Toshiba PB9929

Although googling those two serials and looking things up on Arcade Otaku does suggest that it's a Tri-Sync. I've tried to become and expert over the last 24 hours, but i'd appreciate any advice / guidance from the real experts :)

Thanks!

My understanding is that the Universals generally came with a Sanwa 29E31S monitor.

The Toshiba is the Tri sync monitor and the chances are that if it has that monitor it probably started life as a Net City or New Net City.

The side covers would suggest it's a Net City as opposed to a New Net City.

I'd guess the white front screen cover and control panel are Universal parts (probably because the NC originals were yellowed/damaged) as why would someone put Universal decals on a NC?

So i'm basically saying I think it's a NC that's been refurbed with a couple of Universal parts. You can always get the correct decals from arcade artshop and swap them. Won't really make any difference to the value as the only thing that will really affect value is the Toshiba tri sync vs Sanwa 31khz.

Hope this helps.jerryspaghetti2022-08-05 12:36:38

Yeah that's great thanks.

It's a good point about a refurb with some donor parts, didn't think about that. I'm just keen to avoid the 31 khz only monitor, as I'd be planning to add the extra buttons and run some CPS2 stuff via Jamma maybe.

Swapping out the decals and sticks would be fun!

Not sure if I'm correct on this but I think Net City and New Net City tend to be 100v input cabs and you need a stepdown to use where as Naomi cabs are usually 240v input and already have a big brick transformer inside.

Ive got more experince with Naomi cabs and never had a Net City or New Net City.

Hmm this had a 240v 'brick' I think which seems to have been removed and replaced with an ATX.

I'm not clear on weather it's a chopped Naomi uni which appears to have had the tri-sync monitor 'installed' if that's even possible.

Or weather or not it's a NC that has been refurbed with Naomi Uni parts and had the power supply swapped out.. if that's even possible

All the parts are interchangable so anything is possible, you dont even need to chop the Naomi Legs as the NNC ones fit straight on.

One way to tell would be to look at home the foot is with the leg covers removed, there is a captive thread a the bottom of the leg that the foot fits over and then held in place with a nut, if the leg has been chopped that may not always be there, also if the legs have been chopped you should be able to tell from the leg mounting holes as they will have had to have been drilled and some of them are slotted originally.

What does the sticker on the right hand side near the rear of the base say, it should possibly have the power spec on it.

If youve got more photos of the innards stick them up

Theres an old for sale thread here for a NNC for reference.

This is a picture of the internals

Bottom left of the picture is where the transformer would normally be in a Naomi, on the NNC everything is just wired direct to the incoming power and needs a step down to work in the UK.

This is what the transformer would look like, the incoming power in a Naomi would go to this and then everything in the cab needing AC would get its power from that. The Audio Amplifier in a Naomi would be fed 12v AC from this transformer so not sure how the power is done in a NNC for this.

Depending on whats been done to the cab the ATX power supply you mentioned could be the Sega Sun Power supply that originally comes with the cab.

That's really good info thanks, here is a picture of the internals:

It has the transformer you mentioned, you can see the PSU here as well.

So it looks like it's a Naomi cab that's been refurbed or modded to some extent. The feet look different to other examples, so either it's been chopped or legs swapped out as you suggested.

Here is a close up of the leg, I grabbed from a video the seller provided.

Not sure about the output sticker but i'd assume it's going to say 240 V.

Looks like someone had just painted the feet black, I think you might be right with it being a Naomi either with chopped legs and covers or NC ones fitted, pretty sure there was someone a while ago selling NNC and NC legs and leg covers as sets so you could convert.

I would be wary of the ATX PSU being used to power the Naomi, I know there are adapters you can buy and people use them to run it away from a cab but Ive heard the Naomi MBs are very sensitive to the 5v voltage with it needing to be very close to 5v and can be damaged if it gets too high, and ATX PSUs dont normally give any option to adjust the 5v like the original PSU does.
