Hi there,

Lifelong gamer here (55), initiated in the 70’s with Space Invaders and never looked back. Most of the last 30 years on various iterations of consoles but earlier this year I stuck an lcd in my dining room table and an Atari and started playing some retro games on it.
Turns out this re-ignited a long lost feeling that hits differently than the latest COD.

Shortened version is that I bought some Arcade1ups, an original (Data East) Star Wars pinball table, spent the summer building a Star Wars Arcade sit down/Cockpit and most recently acquired an original Taito Space Invaders Cocktail Table (which is a simply beautiful piece of retro styling).

Looking at my machines it only just occurred to me that sub consciously I must have always liked the simplicity of black/dark background games i.e Ateroids, Star Wars, Defender, Centipede, Pong, Space Invaders, Tempest (the only exception in my setup is a SF2 big blue because that was such a game changer that actually got me back in Arcades in the 90’s).

Anyway, looking forward to arcade chats

Cheers Dave. Yeah I most definitely prefer the real thing (although I couldn’t afford a room full of originals).
I think that unique/interesting ways of interacting with the game is what makes arcade games different- even nasty repro spinners/yokes/trackballs/flippers differentiate from sitting on a sofa with an Xbox controller for all games.
I like the things that make you vomit but we both prefer authentic originals so we’ve found both diversity and common ground in our very first interaction, happy days😀

Thanks Bods. Unfortunately I wasn’t in this area in the 80’s sorry. The Star Wars isn’t finished yet (roof cut outs/vinyls to add and control bevel extras). Don’t judge me for the lcd and the comfy added seat, I’m old with a bad back and I wouldn’t know where to start with a vector monitor). IMG_2189.jpegIMG_2190.jpeg

Welcome ….. as we age perhaps simplicity in a game is easier to comprehend? I prefer the early games too!

Edit .. that Star Wars s/d looks ok … it only posted above as I was typing the welcome.

Welcome matey. Im just up the road in Derby. I collect for the Neo Geo, a regular at toy and game fairs, and often pop into Super Game Shack lv2.
Hello battlechasers, yeah I know Derby quite well having worked there for a few years. Not yet a regular at fairs but that may change soon so may see you around!

Hi 69er, I think you’re right re simplicity. I do play some modern games online (just to keep in touch with my adult kids) but I’m always the one wondering around without a clue what’s going on.

fresh meat!!!

welcome, lots of friendly faces here and a great community, enjoy your stay and share pics of your machines(not the 1ups though)
Thanks kingtreelo, it does seem a friendly bunch (although definitely getting a sense that 1ups are considered demonseed around here, but I’m only really here about my original stuff so it doesn’t really matter). IMG_2181.jpeg

That's a shame, I'd like others that knew the arcades to refresh my memory of some of the machines that were there, anyway

That don't look bad at all, love Cockpit machines hence I have a few, bad back also and yeah Star Wars ain't comfy cab at all lol but then they were designed for short gaming stints mostly. got a rather beat up SW Cockpit with PC in, Got CRT but keep debating a bigger LCD in there but not decided, I made the yoke swap-able with analogue joystick and throttle so I can play loads of flight and space games

Having a swappable controller sounds like great idea (that i don’t think of). Wow must be cool to have a few cockpits, I think I’ve hit my space limit for them unfortunately. (already in head scratch mode thinking of where that Space Invaders Cocktail Table is ultimately going to fit). You’re right about timing too, I never had enough money as s kid to spend enough time to get uncomfortable in a Star Wars sit down in the arcades!
