Phoenix display problem

Hi,
I just got a lovely fully working Taito Super Space Invaders 91.
It has a JAMMA loom and connector and a working Hantarex MTC 900 13 " CRT. My favourite game is Phoenix and the modern multi game Maim boards do not replicate this game well, so I thought I would drop in one of my Phoenix boards with it's JAMMA converter, but there is a problem.
The game does run, but the display is faint and is corrupted with a regular noise pattern drifting sideways.
See photo.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and if there is a fix?

I know there are issues with Phoenix not displaying on modern VGA CRTs due o unconventional signal, but I thought it would be OK on the Hantarex MTC 900Display in this cabinet.

you could try this
  • Pin 1:Blue Video
  • Pin 2: Green Video
  • Pin 3: Red Video
  • Pin 4: Ground (GND)
  • Pin 5: LEAVE COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED (Vertical Sync)
  • Pin 6: C-Sync Input (Horizontal Sync / Composite Sync pin)

Also does the chasiss have a negative sync / posative sync toggle switch .
Sw4
Near video in connector.
Try switching that across

Apparently an American mtc9000 variant also exists . With separate
3 pin connector .. normally white connectors on that one apparantly.

Thanks for the help guys.
I have a good video ground from the phoenix board to the CRT ground (pin4).
The yellow vertical sink (pin 5) lead has been cut to the JAMMA socket and the white horizontal sink lead is connected to the video sink (pin P) on the JAMMA.
The Space invaders game displays perfectly, but not Phoenix. Both boards have a single sync.

Of the video connector. ?

check your adapter is taking sync pin V from Phoenix

To pin p of jamma edge via adaptor.
With multi meter ?

Have you adjusted hold pot also ?

I have puzznic that’s doing this ..
I need to try pin 6 only on vid connecter with that one .

The yellow vertical sync lead from the monitor has been cut near the connector on the monitor and the end that should go to the JAMMA is left loose ( not connected to the JAMMA SOCKET).
The white horizontal sync is connected to the JAMMA and the converter board connects this to pin V on the Phoenix board.

I can't see if there is a positive/ negative sync switch in the monitor. I'll have to get the screen off to check this.
That is a great point. I'll check that later.

I'm going to try reconnecting the vertical sync lead back to the monitor and tying the vertical sync to the connected horizontal sync to see if that is required.

Strange how the super space invaders board works with just the horizontal sync

I haven't adjusted any pots. That's tiger teratory. Especially as the original space invaders display works perfectly.

I would connect your yellow c sync pin p from jamma edge to your video connector pin 6 on your mtc 9000

If it’s cut I would reconnect it back together ,

Make sure it goes like this

V to p p yellow wire to pin 6 of video connector ..

Pin 5 of video socket wants to be empty

Only 1 sync wire Hori and vert are combined. - C sync

Sorry, I'm a bit confused now.
Pin 5
Check the video GND is also connected to the video GND of the jamma connector (pin 14 parts side).
Thanks, yes it is. Belled it out

You mentioned white horizontal sync ?

I would think that’s video ground

1 sync wire only Yellow C sync ,
pin P on the jamma edge .
&
Pin V centuri Phoenix is C sync…

They go to pin 6 on your chassis video in connector green .

If you still have issues it’s something els

1 sync wire Yellow C sync
The monitor has a 6 pin connector.
5 is yellow (vertical sync) and 6 is white ( horizontal sync).
The white lead is connected to pin P (video sync) on the JAMMA socket. This is in turn connected to the video sync on the Phoenix board via the converter card.
The yellow vertical sync cable from the monitor to the JAMMA socket has been cut.
The Super Space Invaders works fine without it.
I tried two different Phoenix boards which are known to be good and work as is the Phoenix to JAMMA converter board.

Thats how it's connected. Pin 6 from the monitor is connected right through to V Sync on the Phoenix board.
The lead fromPin 5 has been cut off.
My pin 6 lead is white and pin 5 is yellow.

Is your converter separating the sync then ?

Pin v on Phoenix is combined sync
It’s a combined sync game

Hanterex mtc 9000 c sync is pin 6

You could try it as maybe the converter is doing something

Do you see a 3 pin connector near your 6 pin connecter ? ( usa chasis 9000)
And or a switch ?close to video connector ? Sync polarity switch

if you have horizontal and vertical wires

Wired them to 5 & 6
The phoenix board and the super space invaders both only have one Video sync output, but he monitor has two sync inputs. Yellow on pin 5 and white on pin 6 of the green connector. The yellow lead has been cut and the super white lead (pin 6) is connected to the JAMMA socket at PIN P. This works fine for super space invaders, but not for Phoenix.

Yeh cool that’s correct ..

Pin 5 only for separate sync
But your game don’t need it .

Sync pot on controll pcb have you tried dialing it in ?
Sync polarity switch ?
Do you see a Small three pin connector ? Near video in connector ? ( only
On usa variant of mtc 9000 )

I see. The video sync from the Phoenix board is connected to pin 6 on the monitor (c-sync). So that should be good.
There is no 3 pin plug next to the 6 pin video lead plug on the monitor.
I can't see a sync polarity switch, but it's difficult to see the monitor board without getting the screen out. I need to do that, but people have been so helpful, I've had my work cut out replying to suggestions!
