Addams Family help needed

Tonight I went to look at a friend's Addams Family, there is another thread here where I said what the initial fault was, and mostly the evening was a success.
I bought a rubbers kit and spent a couple of hours replacing everything on the playfield. That went well.

Next I looked at the DMD fault, and sure enough, re-seating all the connectors did the trick, the DMD now works perfectly.

But......there is always a but.....

When I got in the back box I found a horrific mess around the 3 Duracell batteries....which I thought they guaranteed not to leak!.....where sadly all 3 had leaked, and the lower battery terminals were just a mess. Because the battery board isnt flush to the pcb though, it looks like they have avoided any circuit damage. I cleaned up as best I could and put 3 new batteries in there.

Then came the switch on. As stated, the DMD comes on without the issue it had before, and the machine cycles some messages about factory settings restored, no time/date set, things like that

I can press the end button of 4 and it goes into the various menu's. I have gotten to the time/date menu and set that, but I have found that only the + button and the menu button (buttons 3 & 4) seem to work. I can find no way of getting out of the menu other than powering off, where it comes back on and says time and date not set, so obviously the batteries are still an issue, unless I have to exit the menu properly to fully save that setting.

i had to break off as it was getting late, but before I went I did some continuity testing between the 4 switches and the input board, and found that switch 3 (minus) barely worked, but 1,3 and 4 seemed fine. 1 is marked as "escape" I think, but seems to do nothing. I will try a link wire to ground next time I am round.

Are there any thoughts as to what I should do next ?

Should it work even without batteries in, albeit factory settings each switch on ?

How should I exit that menu, or stop it coming on on switch on ?

Entering the date felt weird in the menu. Everything I tried to set added one, so for example, i would press button 3 to add the date, stopped at 20 and pressed button 4 to move to month, it moved, but added 1 to 20.

That is a common fault when the batteries leak. Switch problems galore!!!! I had the same with a sttng.
Like you say try grounding the switch wire once you have replaced the batteries otherwise it will keep saying set the date.
Best send the cpu board if it doesn’t work to Pinball mania or Pinball heaven.
Try your idea first but the acid has got to the pcb.

You'll need to he able to escape back out for it to save the settings. Check the connector for the door switches the far end to the pcb is seated correctly. If it's the pole switch faulty then you can either quickly ground it as you said or try working the switch up and down many times to bring it back to life.

First reseat all connectors at the bottom of the CPU board.

Worse case.
Corroded tracking.
You will have to trace which track that button corresponds to on the schematic and then the on the CPU pcb and solder a wire to repair.

Try and clean the pcb with Iso alcohol to clean off the corrosion.

This may still happen again later due to the continuation of corrosion.

Other than that buy a new pcb.

OK, so my plan based on the above advice is to remove the board and get it home, and check all the components around the battery area and repair as necessary. I'm ok with that electronics side, its just actual pinball's I have never worked on.
The door switch bank was definitely iffy, I had the connector on the board removed and was checking continuity from there to the switch when pressed, and nothing was coming through on switch 2. I gave it a blast of switch cleaner when I left.

I will also get a remote battery holder and get that issue sorted while I am in there.

Watch this space....

Battery issues aside, those door switches often go bad, I often end up replacing them.

It may be just a knackered switch on the coin door or a loose wire. Failing that have a good look at the battery terminal and ensure there is no damage around it .

Ive just had to replace BR3 on my TAF as it kept blowing a fuse. J692019-02-22 12:34:03

White vinegar and a toothbrush for battery corrosion
Acid will run down the traces and keep eating the board if not nutralised
