Another... Nintendo Space Firebird Restoration

Well, there are large shoes to fill when it comes to working on a Space Firebird. Jon's set the bar pretty high. So what I'm looking to do is get this baby looking nice, and hopefully have it working. So far... there is sound... and the boards look dust free.

Anywway, here's some pics... more to follow in time. I couldn't wait to get the cab out of my boot, so I decided to drill the locks there and then. Wish I hadn't as there are still bits of brass everywhere. Quick job, and a nice suprise.

Clips and wood finish are in a right state... will be getting those re-chromed and replaced.

On removing the top, I noticed that there was a wobbily bit of ply where the hinge attached... get that reglued and stapled.

Off with the fake wood effect. Heat gun (on low heat, a la Jon) and it comes off easy. Simples.

Time for a good sand and get the thinners out to remove that awful foam. It's rock solid.

Only 16,412 plays.

Everything from the inside was carefully removed... bagged and tagged in preparation for beadblasting and powdercoating. I've gone for the same paint finish and colour (RAL 8017 Chocolate Brown). Just need to clean up a few bits and remove the cable ties and prep them for re-use.

Just needs a wee bit of cleaning and get the control panels sorted out and we're good to go with the powder coating.

8017 is no where near the same, too light.

It's the colour I had my Space Fever done and I LOVE it.

If we all get 8017, we can just pretend it's the correct colour

Great work simplesi and nice photos! I remember a while back trying to match the wood veneer without success.

I was following: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=234109 where the guy found

"Indian (Bombay) Rosewood veneer"

to be a close match, couldn't find it over here (one that looked right anyway).

Please let me know if you manage to find one.

Positive it's RAL 8017. It's the closest colour I could also find. I have the colour charts to hand as well.

Looking good. I've been there before ......

As far as the colour is concerned, Vic is right (to a degree) but the original brown used on the steel is more like dipped coating that 'resembles' powder coat. In all honesty, the chocolate brown of RAL 8017 and finish is WAY better than what Nintendo used, even not technically original.

One thing you need to consider is that when the main leg bolts are tightened, be careful as the powder coating can (and will) crack if over tightened. Get a touch up of enamel paint in the same code made up.

just ordered the paint colour for mine cocktail cabinet, and yes, it too is going to be REL 8017.
