Feeling good about this one, so good i thought i would make a post.

I was on my way home today and spotted a old CRT sat alongside some rubble and other junk.

I already have a CRT, a little Toshiba 14 inch portable but something about this one screamed out 'save me' .. now, i ride a motorbike, it's about 28 inches so no chance i asked my parents to grab it but nope... got home but still played on my mind.

I ended up asking next door if he would help which he kindly did got to the house and knocked and asked if it was just rubbish and if i could take it away he gladly said yes so off we went. I had no clue if it worked but it was completely dry and we've had zero rain for weeks here so i thought my chances would be fairly good.

Got it home and after a good hard wrestle with the beast i got it all set up even took the original stand too.. plugged it in with my jap NTSC PS1 and...

Perfect! no odd noises nothing, turned on without a single hitch. The screen was a little dark but i could tell this was due to user settings. sadly i came with no remote so i couldn't change them... or could i? I thought wait... my old 14 inch TV is a toshiba.. would the remote possibly work?

In a word, YES! every function works perfectly and i got the EQ and picture setup perfectly. It looks sooo, sooo good! Now it's no Trinitron but damn it's nice!

4:3 mode:

I left it running music for a bit just to let it run and warm up as god knows when it was last used.

After a lot of tinkering and some warm up time, this was the final out come.. the picture is so sharp! It looks fantastic!

Really glad i saved this from the skip. Shame it isn't a 4:3 but honestly it was free and it looks great. Time for a Japanese PS2 now i think!

Well done!

It's sad to think how many top-end, fully-working CRTs were just scrapped, and how quickly it happened. By and large, it's just the tatty dross that's left these days, and it usually gets snapped up by the scalpers and sold on for silly money. Looks like you got a nice one for free. Bonus!

The Local Authorities haven't helped. At all the 'Community Recycling Centres (=tips) near me, all old TVs have to go into a guarded container. In the olden days, you could just take one, or at worst swap the tip guys a fiver for your choice of the crop. Those days are long gone...

I bet it weighs a ton.

Awesome save though. The picture looks great

Thanks! Ironically, it's not that heavy... I mean it's sure as hell no LCD but i can carry it myself without much trouble. I've known some CRT's that you need a fork lift to lift it so that's another bonus that it's light for a CRT.

Indeed... To think how many Trinitron sets were just dumped... Argh! This TV is good but the later Trinitrons were absolutely fantastic! Infact even the ones from the 90's were too. Sony had it nailed when it came to CRT's.

Wait what? People are scalping CRT's now?? Really!? Funny how things end up... once considered junk, now clearly sought after. Sadly though like you say i bet all the high end stuff is long gone and for no good reason. CRT's are so tough i saw this one yesterday and i knew it would work. i had no issue what so ever taking the gamble as i just knew it would be ok.

I've not been to the tip for years but i do recall seeing PC CRT's and CRT tv's in a large box around the back, I'm sure you could of grabbed one and slipped the chaps a bit of cash but i bet it's completely changed now. Infact, Do any of you even see CRT's at tips now? I'm curious. They seem to be getting really rare generally. Or maybe they are all chucked in a container like you said because of health and safety and all that crap...

I haven't been to the tip for about 6 months. But I've been doing a lot of work in the garden over the past couple of years and visited about once a month for ages before that.

I used to always take a sneaky peek into the TV and Monitor container on the way out. While it was normally packed with scarily new-looking flat-panel TVs - most of which I imagine worked fine, but just weren't the absolutely latest model - there was always at least one CRT. Granted, they tended to be of the 16:9 variety, and massive. But there was the occassionally 4:3 in there too.

Sniff around the TV container for more than a second or two, and the tip guys were over like a shot to check out what you were up to. I have asked about taking stuff in the past, but the jobsworths wouldn't hear of it. Maybe they were retro games fans too, and were waiting to snaffle the gear themselves? In the end, I was lucky enough find one local pick-up only on eBay for a fiver. But that's pretty rare nowadays too.

Your freebie looks great. But like you say, the Sonys are usually the best. In terms of picture quality at least, they tend to trump everything, even the mighty B&O, which look the part, but are a pita when it comes to connectivity. My CRT dream is to get myself as recent and unmolested a Sony 4:3 as possible to see me through to the end times. Think it would have to be 21" too. My eyes aren't what they used to be. Don't fancy paying scalper prices for one, though. So, it'll probably never happen.

Sad times.

Yeah it's not a bad set, looks good but it's nothing compared to a Sony. I used to have a flat screen Sony Trinitron 28 inch wide screen and that thing was just... well... perfect!

Sweet fine. Some PS2 games are widescreen I think and so will look great on this. I've a Thomson widescreen with PS2, XBOX/360 etc.

Very true! I'm actually trying to find myself a NTSC PS2 with Ridge Racer V as the graphics on that still stand up well today and i'd imagine that game would look great on this TV. That said, even Ridge Racer on PS1 translates very well to 16:9 it doesn't look out of place at all. I prefer it to 4:3 mode but I'm sure some games looks awful in 16:9.

Either way it's a massive step up from what i had...

True I literally can't remember the last time i saw even a little portable one. Such a shame but for the casual TV viewer i can understand the appeal to switch to LCD. it's sad to think how many really nice, extremely capable CRT's are gone.

As others mentioned... looking at eBay the prices have gone absolutely stupid!! over £100 for a Sony Trinitron KV-14LT1U 14" ?!?! Ok it's a nice set but jesus christ haha!

I grabbed this brand new old stock unused 4:3 28" Sanyo complete with everything for £45 recently. They are out there. You've just got to find them... and be patient. If you need one in a hurry you'll get screwed.

If I can find a nice suitable 25" locally (ideally Tosh 2552DB) for a 'drop-in' spare I'll let the Sanyo go here. I'll probably never use it but it's an emergency spare.
