Anyone used AI for artwork?

I need a marquee for my dedicated PC Engine cab, and wondered if giving AI a go at designing it is worth a go. Is this chatGPT thing I keep hearing about the thing to use? Any tips on getting good results?

Cheers.

In a very minor way but it was blooming handy. I’ve only got a crappy screenshot below but I asked for a simple logo in a (wild) Western style for a Hori joystick I was modding for my MVS. IMG_8354.jpeg

I have used it for beer labels and stuff and does a good job overall. What i have just done is used it for a freezer for my Beer (One that has a chiller mode) it came back with recommendations but no manufacturer gave any internal measurements just how many Litres you can put in it. I mean who wants to know that !! I dont go the butchers and get 2ltr of Lamb ! lol. Anyway I approached the manufacturer who could not give me an answer (I find that strange but tried 2) I asked AI and it said it would Estimate and gave me 470 x 1000 , I was worried as I needed to fit 6 x 19l Corny kegs in and 2 s 9.45l kegs (These would go on the hump) but looking at the estimated they would fit.

So i purchased the Freezer and it arrived today .....................................

And bugger me it fits with room to spare !!! ( I only put 5l in for example , It will fit 6 19l ) The size is 470 x 990 !!!!!!

Sorry for a huge writeup but just an example of AI that gets it wright :)

I had to make a number of marquees for some cabs and one was for Solomon's Key, which there isn't an official marquee for. So got ChatGPT to create one. Fed it a couple of URLs to the game and it produced a few ideas, settled on one and asked to swap out a few details. You can see the final result here:

Thanks all. Sounds promising. I've never really used chatGPT before, but I guess the more details I provide, the better the results? Or is it possible to bog it down with too much detail, causing confusion?

Only thing to add is if you have images it can use then paste to it as they can not get images from the web and used then (If that makes sense) , Because of copy right shit.

I feel like I have to speak up on the negatives here!

AI will create generic art, which might be fine, but it often has errors in (ie: inconsistent number of fingers, or lacking important details like eyes) which would annoy me personally.

And of course there’s the moral aspect, giving billionaires more money, supporting don’t data centres, wasting electricity, contributing massively to global warming…

I just felt the need to inform. Not a personal attack on anyone who uses AI, just giving the facts about it.

i dont use AI personally, but i build the underlying infrastcuture, it can be frustrating the way AI is used at times, we use it extremely ethically and not for things like picture manipulation and such

I use it every day for all sorts of things. Had some excellent results from arcade marquees and animated marquees. Like said above though you can get extra fingers etc.
ive just done a set of Stream Deck Icons all in neon and I’m very happy with the end result. Did have to correct it a few times though to get the finished result.

Theres others to choose other than ChatGPT, like Copilot and there’s some you can use what you pay for credits. Think I paid £20 for a lot of credits with Google Flow. It is getting better all the time.

Our workplace is AI driven, every part of the system uses AI to some degree.

The issue with fingers, eyes, more arms than there should be, etc... has largely been solved with the latest LLMs (Large Language Models).

One thing though is if using the likes of ChatGPT, you'll need to subscribe and pay for the service, you can cancel anytime though, of which it may still be limited to some extent. The free versions are very limited, think 3 or 4 image creations and limited in size.

There are other systems and services that specialise in image and video such as https://artlist.io/ or https://seedance2.ai/ai-image

Great to experiment with, and you may be surprised just what you can do.

Interesting, I just asked ChatGPT to create a Williams Defender marquee and for it to be as exact as possible. Its response:

I'm sorry, but I can't help create or reproduce an exact copy of copyrighted artwork such as the original Williams Defender arcade marquee.

If you'd like, I can create a new, original marquee inspired by the classic 1981 Defender aesthetic—for example:

  • A retro 1980s sci-fi space battle theme.
  • Bold neon "DEFENDER" lettering in a similar vintage arcade style (without copying the original logo).
  • Alien spacecraft, exploding enemy ships, laser effects, and a starfield.
  • Dimensions optimized for a Williams marquee (24.375 × 7.75 aspect ratio). The original Defender upright marquee was approximately 24⅜" × 7¾".
This would capture the feel of the original while being completely new artwork rather than a reproduction.

Think I'll just go online and download one, lol.

I had to see what it would come up with though, so here's the result.

It's accurate to the original because it's scraped the internet and found originals, but also added its own quirks to it. It's better to do a proper image search, in which I found the artwork in super high res pretty easily:
And that was free to find, it didn't cost credits or any supercomputer to recreate one.
Yeah, no point asking AI to reproduce artwork that already exists, but I need it to create something that doesn't currently exist, else I would have just downloaded it.

As a designer, first thing I noticed was that the decayed effect on the typeface should be transparent not white
Yes, good spot. I had to do quite a lot of tidying up in Gimp.

AI is probably the biggest double edged sword mankind has ever developed. F’ing hate the modern world and modern ‘society’ sometimes! 😁

If we could stay back in time (80s/90s) I’d find it hard to resist.

For me the greatest 20 years of life on the planet especially in the UK were the summer of ‘76 to Euro ‘96. Born ‘68 and super lucky to grow up then.
