So ....... Atari Asteroids Deluxe ...... Snagged off eBay last week. Collected Sunday.

I had dreams of finding an unhacked, entirely original, matching serials cab. Maybe even find it just needs the fabled easy fix.

Ummmm ..... Perhaps not.

This is without doubt the filthiest, smelliest cab I've ever encountered, let alone owned. So bad is the aroma that I struggle to be in the same room as it.

These pics were lifted off the eBay ad:

And from those pics, it doesn't look toooo bad. The biggest clue about what was to come is provided by this pic:

7dcca30b.jpg

I was properly puzzled by exactly what all of the crap in the bottom is, where it came from, and how it got there ....

The good news is that most of the crap is dry, almost crumbles to the touch. Some of it though wasn't dry. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was wet, but it had a sludgy texture to it .... Not good .....

Decided to take the coin bucket out and have a sniff .... And this is what I found:

ff1a994d.jpg

A mouse nest ... Great. The cab had been stored somewhere dry. The sludge stuff is the usual crap, but soaked in mouse piss. Truly disgusting.

The 'good' news is that I've taken all of it out. Every piss soaked piss. The other good news is that despite all of this the base of the cab is sound.

The bad news is that everything in the bottom of the cab is pretty badly rusted. Before I could properly clean inside I wanted to remove the power assembly and wiring harness. 4 hours to do that. At one point I thought I'd have to resort to drilling some of the screws out. Resorted instead to fitting as much of my considerable bulk as possible into the cab of piss .... Not nice.

But power brick now out:

As is wiring harness:

I've sprayed the floor of the cab with disinfectant.

Next job will have to wait until the weekend. That'll be dragging the cab outside with a bucket of water and bleach and attacking it with a stiff brush.

I've a feeling this cab might take a while ....

Wow. Just thank the Lord it's not cat piss - you'd *never* get rid of that smell. A mouse spent Christmas in my Space Harrier Dlx and *ATE* the damn instruction sheet / DIP instructions from the inside. Cheeky little bastard

My mouse had better taste than yours. Set up home in an Atari. Sega still shows a mouse with a taste for the finer things in life, but I reckon Atari shades it. Just a shame he decided to piss all over it .... :)

Made me laugh this one! You have your work cut out but the cab looks solid enough and it's all there, i've seen worse....it will just stink of piss for a while!

Edit - Atari Mice do tend to have an element of quality about themPAC-MAN2012-03-05 22:36:10

So ... What to do with the dirty smelly cab? I've already had the Dyson inside it. So much crap on there that I had to empty it twice. Even given the base a light sanding. But all that really achieved was moving some of the remaining filth from one place to a other. And there are some parts of the cab that are pretty much inaccessible. Even with a tooth brush.

So .... Time to exercise the nuclear option:

7bcbba13.jpg

Grot Buster. Great name. Cillet Bang. Tried and tested. And Neutrodol .....

Makes for a heady concoction when mixed in a bucket of warm water, a splash of bleach, and washing up liquid. And then tipped in to the cab ....

Half an hour and a stiff brush later, and it's looking a bit cleaner in there. Getting the water out was a pain, as the cab is bloody water tight ...

Anyway, here she is, resting after the ordeal, and soaking up a few rays:

Hopefully that should sort it out. Cab still needs a clean, but at least the dirt and grime is finally shifted .... Wiring harness is currently in the dishwasher. So that might look a bit cleaner soon too.

hmmm, now you have me worrying, my asty deluxe has spent the last 3 years safely in my garden shed or so I thought, I hope your mouse didn't have family in these parts, plus I think I left the schematics in it so plenty of mouse bedding material.......

Cripes have you checked it? even without the mice in something like a shed it's probably turning into some kind of mouldy cheese.

Wow and I thought getting the fag/booze smell out of mine with a little liquid soap was bad enough!

I have a spare ARII/Main PCB/Brick for sale (need the room) , should you want replacement.

Been a while since I updated this thread, and the cab is still far from finished. Most of the wiring is loose in the cab, needs new t moulding, needs a speaker fitting, and bulbs for coin door (voltage present, bulbs absent). But I think the cab has come a long way. Fully working, fully playable. Currently has an Asteroids PCB in it. I haven't got round to testing the DLX PCB yet. Might give that a go tomorrow.

Anyway, few pics:

Speaker grill is present and correct (and freshly painted) but have stuck a piece of white paper behind it to cut down glare from light as speaker usually sits there.

Nice to have another working cab. I'll update the thread properly over the weekend, as cab should be mostly sorted by then.

I think I'm going to call this one finished. There are a few things I'm not happy with, and will go back and redo at some point. Is any resto ever truly finished? I'm sure some are, but none of mine ....

Side art going on:

I know the art isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I quite like the way it ties the cab together. Colours in the marquee, control panel, and the monitor overlay repeated in the side art:

So. That'll do for now I reckon.tb lilley2012-05-18 19:44:13

I love it!

Weird to see Deluxe written on such a small cabinet.

What is the "deluxe" feature of this cab?

It just look "cabaret" to me..

Eurotronic : The OP is running a regular Asteroids pcb in an Asteroid Deluxe machine. Asteroids Deluxe is a completely different pcb and different game, in that you have shields instead of hyperspace, and the ufo enemy now splits apart into multiple baddies that come and get you. The rocks also rotate in deluxe whereas they are static in regular asteroids. Deluxe should also have a pale blue screen overlay... The sounds in Asteroids Deluxe are all created with a POKEY chip wheras they are analogue in Asteroids. Sometimes people call it 'DLX' to make it quicker to type, thats all :) Deluxe also saves the top 3 high scores as standard.

Indeed.

I've been holding out for the Braze multi kit, but my patience has quite frankly run out. If anyone fancies a swap (I.e my Asteroids for a DLX) then let me know.

Could you help me

I want to build a replica of asteroids deluxe cabaret, the first game in which I played as a boy. I already have most of the parts, coin door, transformer, audio board and monitor, etc.

I need the exact dimensions of the cabinet to build the replica. (particularly the distribution of holes on the front side, rear side and the monitor position inside cabinet, etc.)

I searched on the internet, but there are only dimensions to Battlezone cabaret (another front side)

greetings
MK
