Atari System II - Black to White

I was just looking at this thread on removing formica from cabs.

I am looking to make the sides of the System II cab I have white (rather than black) would you say its better to remove the black first or just cover it over with new white. Any ideas where I can get the white stuff from? I have repro System II side art then to go on top of that.

I don't understand why it's black anyway, as they were always white cabs as far as I know

It's not from USA is it? been painted?

The bits in side say Atari Ireland, its not been painted, its defo black formica/vinyl directly onto the wood, no white underneath it, where looking a little bit of chiping on the corner.
