I'm waiting on an item from Japan, it was sent EMS 3 day service and arrived on Monday there..

Your parcel is currently with the customs authorities and is being assessed for import duties and local taxes. These will be notified to the addressee and usually need to be paid prior to the parcel being delivered.

..what's the norm when waiting for clearance? I haven't imported anything from outside the EU for a long time..

My SMJ Sea Freight parcels can take from 3-7 days sat in customs "Awaiting Customs Clearance".

EMS ones should be fast-tracked as you've paid for faster delivery.

Lousy sods...make me wait a week and charge me for it too. That takes the shine off the purchase.

I just wonder what value the seller put on the declaration as it was a significant amount, but he only charged me an extra $10 for EMS 3 day.. would it have cost him/(me) alot more in shipping if he had declared a value of say £1250? ..I'm guessing so.. so hopefully he valued it around £50.. if not I'm going to get a big bill too.

Seems to be progressing.

Your parcel has now been examined by HM Customs and charges may have been raised by them. Please check the tracking details below for further details. A letter will be sent to the recipient if charges are due.

Once you see that the customs charges have been raised you can phone them and pay the charges, it's saves having to wait for the card to arrive.

Oh, I didn't know that! As you say, saves waiting for the ransom note to come through. Do you just need to give them the tracking number?

Yes - I print the tracking page from the parcelforce website and take driving license and they've let me have it every time.

You need to wait until status changes to "Retained awaiting payment"penrhos2019-03-07 17:50:40

You will prob get a Letter asking you to pay C@ntstoms Fees before they will deliver it!!! I had a personal Package delivered to work from China come this week that took 3 Days to receive a Card saying I had to pay duty before the c@nts would deliver it, then another 3 Days before it was delivered after payment!!
My reason for being so pi55ed off is the item was £20 and these robbing C@nts charged £8 admin fee for paying the £4 duty so total £12, F'ing SCUM!!

Yes mate just give them the tracking number, or like penrhos says you can go and collect once it’s in the delivery depot, make sure you take two pieces of I.D one with your full address on which as to match the address of the package. I’ve only ever used my driving licence but the first time I collected they said I would need two forms of I.D better be safe than have a wasted trip.

Just p’s me off that you pay for a priority delivery service and then customs keep it for a week.
