Blast City speaker replacement

Hi all,

I wondered if anyone knew of a drop in replacement for the rectangular shaped speakers in a Blast city? Mine are sounding a bit rough. I have had a look and the foam is pretty much dust.

Cheers

I have done this on one of my Blast City cabinets. You could wait a long time or even an eternity to find some complete replacement speaker boxes. I gave up in the end and bought some modern speaker replacements (just the speakers). If your Blast was located in a smoke house the original speakers become laden with nicotine and oil and the speaker material disintegrates. I looked into re-foaming the speakers but due to size of them it was going to be impossible. I had external quotes for doing them (without guarantees or promises) but it wasn't cheap.

A replacement set seemed the best option. To replace them, I took the monitor out then carefully unscrewed two screws and carefully bent the metal strip retaining clips back on both of the speaker boxes. I then removed and opened the boxes, removed the grubby speakers, cleaned the insides and installed two new speakers in each speaker box. The ones I got were similar spec but not the same size. I could bolt them down at two positions and then glued them in for the remaining length. Reassembled the box and then installed them back in the cabinet. The sound was comparable for the speakers I bought but lacking the full bass. However, a major improvement on the sound I was getting from the old speakers. You want shielded speakers, if you go down the replacement route. I think they are 8 ohm but would need to confirm.

Honestly, I looked a long time for a pair of replacement speaker boxes- not even a hint of any.

My recent second Blast City had absolutely shot speakers, and after removing the monitor to rotate it, I just couldn't face removing it again to deal with the speakers.
Instead I found a JVC soundbar that by chance was the exact same width and depth as the top of the Blast cab, and I fashioned a couple of brackets to hold it in place.
It actually looks pretty decent up there, and also sounds good.

Yes, they are the same speakers as found in post-Model 3 era Sega drivers (initialD 1/2/3, OutRun2 etc).

There's been a lot of talk about replacement speakers over the years, but to my knowledge the best replacements currently are the Aurasound NS2x3-184-4A. More info here:

Amazon UK seem to be out of stock right now, but Parts Express do them cheap:

https://www.parts-express.com/Aurasound-NS2x3-184-4A-2x3-Extended-Range-Driver-4-Ohm-296-256?quantity=1

Good price, but of course if you're in the UK you'll probably be charged a gajillion old English Pounds by the UK government and selected lucky shipping company for the right to buy such luxury items

Maybe other sellers do them, might be worth a more thorough Google search if you're really interested.

Great find, Outrun2. I will contact them and see what shipping costs are like. Failing that, I will use PC speakers.

Cheers all

Hi Retro77, I actually have a bulk of the Aurasound speakers I ordered for my project Blast City's. I can sell you them at cost if you'd like, it'd work out cheaper considering I paid for bulk shipping.

My Blast speakers are getting rattly, been looking at the Visaton SC 5.9 speakers, almost an exact match for the Aurasounds. Mr_Caesar and nem over on Arcade Projects posted an STL for an adapter bracket that needs a slight tweak by 0.5mm to fit them, around a tenner each. Will give it a go once I clear the Christmas crap from the garage!

I got no sound on my blast ..
Só going to add an amp then look at speakers.

I have 2 sets of original 4 ohm car kenwood & pioneer speakers that I hope will be usable in a cab at some point.
