Building a Sit Down/Stand up Racer

Has anyone built a decent sit down cab, or stand up racing cab on this here forum? I have been on the hunt for an authentic Daytona Cab at a recent price for sometime now and have kind of given up finding one now.

With that said, I'm looking into starting a build for a sit down cab. Does anyone have any interest or experience in building this kind of Cab? I have a PS3 with Daytona installed that i will use as the "gameboard".

Any pics, guides, templates would be most welcome.

Many Thanks! :)

Loads of examples on byoac.

I think your better off trying to pick up a sega driver shell. Touring car or something and mameing it discreetly. Put a wanted up maybe. They turn up on raids quite often.strykr2020-01-05 19:57:09

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into this for sure. Whilst i'm here, do you have any idea what they have gone for in the past?

Thanks again

I've built 2 sit down racers. Both PC based as I hate arcade racers. Much prefer sims. The 1st used aSega Rally 2 and the 2nd was built ground up. Both used the front seats from my late Dad's old Mondeo so some sentimental value there. Took all dimensions directly from the Mondeo and used G27 on each and 42" Plasma / LCD. Subs under the seats and full surround sound add to the effect. Also got surround headphones so I can race without getting moaned at (as one is in the living room!!!). Nascar rocks!

I'm in the middle of a *cough* "Daytona" cabinet at the moment, not a good time to share pics as I did part of the undercoat yesterday and then gave up when the realisation I had to go to work today sunk in.

Basically PS3 powered as it's the closest I can get to it being the original Daytona game with Force feedback (can run on an emulator without the FF).

It's missing the bulky base and driving chair (I just pull a chair up to it when I want to play it), so not sure if it's sit down or stand up.

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.Ging to look into all these posts. It would be fantastic to see some pictures of your builds (both in progress and complete) so I can see just what can be achieved!

Thanks for posting this! Looks like you made a good start! did you get the template from somehwere or did you build it from scratch to your own specs?

I saw your build before I started mine the_geeze, it did give me a dilema...

When thinking about mine, I wasn't sure whether to do a flat dashboard and clamp the wheel to it (easy option), try to do a double layer dashboard and cut the wheel into it (I think this will look the best option if done properly (I can vinyl wrap like a real dashboard) as the bevel on top of the wheel housing will come close to the arcade cabinet shape), or take the wheel apart as you've done.

I wasn't seriously considering this option until I saw your build.

For now I have just clamp the wheel down, but I fully plan on trying to buiild a dashboard with some structure and if that looks rubbish I'll take the wheel apart and go the route you have.

Did you also breakout the wiring for the dpad on the left of the wheel (the button used to change view in Daytona) or did you just move the gears (I couldn't tell what the white buttons were I assumed the dpad broken out)?

Oops just saw I never answered this (sorry).

I grabbed a few pics of a Daytona cabinet off Google images and sketched out something from there (vaguely similar). I took some artistic license, for example as I have no base the feet had to be bigger.

If I had room to make a full sit down cabinet I definitely would have looked for proper scale plans.

The wheel is unhacked and fully functioning; the white buttons are RGB LED pushbuttons and are used for Daytona, Sega Rally etc. as the 'view' buttons. They are connected to an ipac, as is the shifter.

That looks *Excellent* so far! Where did you get that Daytona esq gear mech from?

Did you design the machine yourself?

Looking forward to seeing it complete!
