Hi all,

So, a little while ago I bought a Chihiro with Outrun 2 SP installed. I was told it just needed the region changed from Export to Japan. Flash forward a few months, I bought the pic chip and changed the region....but the game doesn't appear to be working. I'm informed the game is on an sdcard, so is there a way I can replace this sdcard and download a new image from somewhere? The chihiro shows up like it doesn't know the game exists. Is it a quick fix?

Cheers,

Jason.

I never got my Outrun2 running from my SD Card, I think it got corrupted. I went the Pi NetBoot route and blew a new zero key.

Have you considered going this route.

Just open it up and have look in the upper case to see what it's suposed to boot from. When you power it, it should show the bootup screen with "loading a game" and after that "testing a game".
Do you see any of that? Only after the game has loaded, it can show the name of the game in the in game test menu. Under system information you can see to what region the chihiro is set. I am unaware of any differences between a japanese pic and an export one, besides the fact that it might have a different key to decrypt the game image, assuming that one is still encrypted. Your chihiro needs to be set to the same region as the game it's running, but that's not a pic issue. Besides that, the test menu isn't suposed to have a blue background. It looks like the blue color gun of your monitor is driven 2 hard. A filament cathode short inside your picture tube can cause such behavour as well. What does your screen test picture look like?

When i turn it on it counts up to 100% and then when you think thats it, it continues to count further through 200% and 300 etc. If i press Test, up comes the test menu above and it doesn’t seem to think theres a game installed. The OR2 pic has been removed and re-inserted (no broken legs etc). The region of the chihiro and game are now matching as Japan. I did get an error before as there was mismatch of export and Japan but thats definitely sorted.

Any ideas if there are dip switches i need to change to get it to read from the sd card and not go looking for a gd-rom (i’m assuming that might be the possible problem but could be well off). Or is there anyway of checking the image on the sd card to see if it’s corrupted?

Pi netboot is definitely a consideration long term but I’m hoping this might be a quick fix. If I don’t get anywhere within the next few days then i’ll reluctantly chuck more cash at it and buy what i need to get the pi solution working.

your using a type 3

is outrun on sd card or cf card ?
this is like the giz 10p card requires cf box update

have you checked the power connection to the
sd /cf card under the lid ? is pushed on nicely

you might not have the correct pic installed
seems if you needed to change region that this card has not been played
in this chihiro unit at least under its last known configuration/

i would go for you need the correct pic for cf booting
chihro cf pic

or network mode gd rom mode jumper needs swapping

small jumpers jumper number 9 on board near coin battery under lid
try swapping it across from 1-2 to 2-3 or visa versa

Initially i got error 26 but that was before doing the region change. Once i changed the region using the zero pic and popped the OR2 chip back in, the error 26 cleared but the game didn’t seem to be picked up. I still need to open the chihiro up and check to see if the sd card is in securely etc. Hoping to get a few hours free on Friday to troubleshoot it properly so I’m grateful of your suggestions that i can try. Thanks.

you might want to send the
sd game to some body

i don’t have the cf upgrade so i
couldn’t tell you if the game is ok
or not… it is possible i would guess that the game can go bad..
like any hard drive /ssd /cf/sd card
or your chihiro is behaving funny…
my chihiro has a communication error that i can’t sort..

To be honest, it's the first time I am hearing of a chihiro booting from an sd card.
It should be possible as adapters are sold that make an sd card behave like an ide device.

This rises the question why some one would sell such a system without the proper security pic. To get a generic sd card / ide adapter working, you will need to update the type 3 dimm firmware. For that, you need to be able to netboot the system, so you will need a zero key netboot pic. A zero key gdrom/compact flash should work for netboot as well. The dimm will try to read the sd card serial number as security is based upon that. Maybe the sd card adapter doesn't support reading the sd card serial or maybe it's just a compact flash card instead of an sd card.

Your problem is not key chip or media related, you should still get an error (24/25/26/21). Unplug it all, you should get error 26, I’m betting you still get communication error. Sounds like you have a hardware issue with the chihiro, can you go into system information and take a picture please?

I got a little further with it. I took it all to bits and reseated and pushed at everything I could find. Put it all back together and plugged it in and initially going into the test menu still showed no game. I decided to run through the tests on the chihiro and all seemed fine. I then went back to the main test menu and amazingly Outrun2 now appeared. So i went into the game specific settings and all looked fine. Exited test menu completely and it rebooted and Outrun2 booted up. I then had a few games and it all worked. I decided i’d turn it off for a few mins and see if booted first time now. Sadly not. It went back to not finding any game but similarly to before, if i go in and run through the tests, Outrun2 then appears in the test menu and rebooting loads the game. So its not quite working perfectly but its working with a little effort which has made my night.

so after the initial chihiro splash screen it should load the game from the sd card and once its loaded the game will appear

i have never seen a chihiro not load the game and not error

do you think it should be automatically loaded into the ram, it would if your rechargeable battery was all good otherwise it has to load the game from card each time

Sounds to me like he's jumpin into test mode before its started loading. hence why if he waits long enough the game title will show up as it will keep loading in the background.
