Chris Barrie Designs - Replica Cabinets

Hello Folks,
Its been a while since I’ve been active on the site, but I’m toying with the idea of starting to offer CNC cut replica cabinets again. I’ve made a lot over the years for various members of the site, really enjoy it and kind of want to start up again.
However, material costs made me knock it on the head really, and I cant see that dropping anytime soon. I guess I’m interested to see if there is much appetite out there for custom / replica cabs given the price of sheet timber (typically birch ply, hardwood ply, mdf) as it stands.

I did post on the facebook page a while back and got some interest, so really just following up now the forums are up and running (very nicely may I add!)
I’m just putting feelers out there to see how much of an appetite there is, rather than starting to advertise and finding there is just no market.
If anyone is interest in custom cabs, replica cabs, bespoke panels, etc etc feel free to drop me a message either here or email chrisbarriedesigns@gmail.com

Cheers
Chris (Barrie Designs)

As Chris has mentioned, the cost of materials has really shot through the roof over the last couple of years and sees no sign of dropping anytime soon.

In order to help bring the cost down, you need to source good materials and buy in bulk, i.e. by the bail.

I've seen over here one sheet of ply go for £86, but in a bail it drops to £35, especially if you can collect. When buying by the bail you can go directly to the wholesalers or sometimes the importers, again cutting out the middleman so to say. Our main importer is only 4 miles away at Belfast docks so very easy to get to.

This is something I'm looking to do as well, once the workshop manages to erect itself, so slow...

In the meantime I've been modelling original buttons, Atari cones, Galaga and now Defender/Joust joystick assemblies. Bought a load of other steering, shifters, guns, even transformers, etc... and looking to do the same with those.

Will be interesting in what the feedback is, but I'm treating this as a hobby and not a full-time business, at least for now.

Hi, is there any chance you might be interested in reproducing metal control panels at some point? Some of the Cabaret ones are hard to find.

I'm not sure what I'm looking to get into at the minute. Currently it's more the smaller stuff.

A control panel could be done on the plasma cutter and press brake for folding, though a number of the CPs have curves in them that can be tricky to get right on rollers, and something that heavy duty and long can take a fairly beefy set of rollers.

TBH I don't really know until I get the place up and running and start buying in the hardware. Essentially I want to be able to do end-to-end repair work/restoration of full cabs and not have to go outside for most of the work, but we'll see how it goes.
