[ukvac] Converting RallyX to New RallyX
Can anyone confirm for sure (preferably because they've done it)
whether going from Rally X to New Rally X is just a rom and prom swap
please?

I'm reasonably sure it is but since there's more than just a couple
proms involved and i really don't have enough as it is i'd prefer to
know for definate before i just experiment and try it.

Failing that, has anyone made any rom to prom conversion pcb's? Ie,
use a fast rom in place of a prom on an adapter?

I know leopardcats has an article on using a GAL to do this but that
doesn't really help me since i traded my Galep4 with him and now i
can't do GALs!! - Doh!

Ta,
Martin.

Going of the mame source code it looks
like you need to change 5 roms and 3 proms.
The source codes does not seem to emulate any behaviour
that is different hardware wise between the two games so
it it probelry a safe bet for a straight rom/prom swap

Re: [ukvac] Converting RallyX to New RallyX
That's what i had deduced from the mame code the other night too! So,
i guess seeing as the proms are only for colour and sound (i _THINK_)
it would probably not be a waste of time to try the 5 roms first?

Obviously ultimately the three proms would want to be done since the
whole beauty of New RallyX is the funky theme tune :)

Cheers,
Martin.

Yes, I have done this to replace a graphics mapping prom on a sys1
cartride.

I didn't make an adapter as such, just hard wired the required pins
of the rom to a socket so that the rom was 'floating' above the
socket. It didn't work at first (as none of the roms I had were fast
enough) but then I tried a 27F512 intel flash rom from an old PC
motherboard and that worked perfectly, flash roms are generally in
the 20-70ms range whereas roms are 150-300ms range.

Re: [ukvac] Re: Converting RallyX to New RallyX
Well, i now have a TOP2005 programmer sat on the bench with me (and i
have to say, so far i'm impressed - i will do a write up and put it on
my site tomorrow if i get a moment), so i now have the GAL option
available to me.

Downside is, the price of the GAL22V10's. They looked to be quite expensive...

Having half a dozen of those kicking about on little daughterboards
for experimenting with prom replacements would be rather handy to say
the least!

Martin.

Re: [ukvac] Re: Converting RallyX to New RallyX
Okay, may as well come out with it then!!

Anyone got a bootleg SF2 they can sell me for < £20 please. Non
working is fine since i can't stand the game and would just want to
pilfur half a dozen GALs from it.

Any more than £20 (shipped) and it becomes cheaper to source the GALs )

Thanks,
Martin.
