Hi all

Currently wondering why all this press and guff about curved TV's and stuff is
around at the moment. Not being funny but I remember about 10-15 years
ago when all the manufacturers and press were saying flat TV's are the future (I mean with crt not
lcd/Plasma)! They were saying less reflections etc for a flat TV, Now they are saying curved TV's have less reflections .

What so now we have decided actually what we should have
done is curve the TV after all but the other way!!!! Hmmm!!!

I love it when these companys have to come up with new ways of selling stuff.

What are your thoughts on the "NEW" curved TV's?

Well they spent years trying to tell us we all want 3D TV's, now we all need to rush out and buy curved tv's

I suppose it will help the viewing angles for some rooms but i recon they came up with the tech in the lab and are trying to find a reason to use it

Hot for 2020.. CRT, amazing curved effect, horizontal and vertical curving, wow

I was really looking forward to a nice, wide and curved PC monitor rather than 3 separate ones, but so far none of the curved screens I've seen yet even come close. They're not wide enough and are only just a little bit curved.

So I'm kind of at a loss too, but for different reasons...

Perhaps they have other motivations?

so does that mean cinema screens are curved ?

if they are not, then I cannot see much point in a consumer environment

but maybe it's just because they can!

p.s. I was told yesterday that panasonic are ceasing production of plasma screens - whatever TV type I like keeps getting discontinued

mind you, the Samsung 4K TV looked VERY nice ....

Being a camerman and ex projectionist I feel I can make fairly informed judgements on this. This whole kind of thing grates me a little.

Some large cinema screens are curved yes (I mean regular screens not weird oddities like IMAX and Onminimax or immersive screens etc) They curve them for different reasons to the TV makers though.

Large 35mm/digital cinema screens are curved to keep focus. If you think a large cinema screen may be up to 100ft away from the lens in the centre and without a slight curve the edges would be upto 110-120ft away. So the curve in cinema is to keep focus radius across the screen and maintain an optimal focus.

In home use I don't see the point, if anything I would think curving it would show more reflections. I have 2 photo frames in my living room one of which is convex the other one flat. I can see my room light reflecting in the convex in most angles I put it at but not in the flat one. It is mostly marketing hyperbole to me, most of it is anyway. Though 4k tv I agree with that make a difference, if your eyes work fairly decent that is! 3d and curved for home use no it doesn't really work and there is no point. That said 4k transmission/distribution isn't upto scratch yet. My 4k camera shoots at approx 240gb of data per 30mins of footage! Uncompressed of course until 100gb+ media for compressed versions becomes available home use 4k, I am still not buying into it either.

Plasma got left behind in the tchnolgy race with LCD. LCD is cheaper and easier to make. Plus more environmentaly friendly due to manufacturing processes and energy used in operation. Now LCD is getting closer to the contrast ratio and superseeded the refresh rate of Plasma too people won't pay the premium for a plasma. For the little it still has in contrast edge of the LCD.
