Like many people my
first experience with arcade gaming was not in fact at an arcade.

I
have many fond memories of huddling up in front of the family tube with my wood

Pac-Man and Missile command...

I still love the game HERO for that system, I remember playing it on dark winters nights back in the early 80's

composite video mod it... not going well!!)

yes - boxed copies (that haven't been trashed) are starting to get a lot less common now. I've got to about 120-ish but I'm now into the proper "uncommon" (on ebay) games so it's getting harder to collect for.

I may be a little bit older than you because my video gaming days started in the arcades and then 'progressed' to the Atari VCS ('2600'?! Pah!).

Even back then, the urge to play arcade games at home was compelling, but the Atari conversions were very very poor indeed. As a 10-year-old, though, being able to play Space Invaders (albeit a sh*te version) was amazing!

And then in 1982 'Pac-Man' arrived on the VCS. Truly one of the worst arcade ports ever. But it was 'Pac-Man' and it was playable at home, so it sold in its gazillions!

I bought lots of arcade conversions for my VCS BITD, from the top of my head; Space Invaders, Phoenix, Galaxian, Centipede, Vanguard (that was really quite good), Pac-Man (of course!), Space War(s), Missile Command, Asteroids, Defender, even Moon Patrol, which was as accurate an arcade conversion as Adolf Hitler was an advocate for world peace.

I'd love a minty boxed VCS, though, and will probably succumb to getting one at some point.

A true classic. Probably the most accurate arcade conversion was Berzerk.

I always looked at (and drooled over) screenshots for the new fangled 'Colecovision' though - they games looked so good on that, and MUCH more like their arcade counterparts.

Same with the Vectrex - always wanted one as a kid (along with Tin Can Alley, Big Trak and Star Bird) but never got one!

As I only joined this world in 1983 I missed most of the good arcade action, apart from 2 holidays to Wales a year spending all my saved cash at the arcade on Mumbles Pier I didn't really go to any arcades... I loved Berzerk on the 2600. I think it was my first really video game addiction and is the reason I started to get into arcade games, I still dream of owning a Berzerk upright but I'm still having no luck even tracking down a PCB.... One day my friends... One day...
I still love all my crappy 2600 ports though and when ever I've had a sh*tty day at work I always waste away a cheeky half an hour playing my favourites, Berzerk, Sky Skipper, Solar Fox ect ect...
